In an article entitled “Searching for a Stone Age Odysseus”, it says that up until a decade ago, archaeologists assumed that the adventurous travels of Odysseus, as reflected in Homer’s Odyssey, were the first ventures in the Mediterranean, placed 10,000 years ago. Or that sea travel was a human endeavor that started in the Bronze Age.
However, excavators in 2010 claimed to have found stone tools in Crete dating back at least 130,000 years, leading to assumptions that man traveled the seas as early as in the Neanderthal stage.
The recent find indicates that the Neanderthal was navigating the Mediterranean. After all, Crete was inhabited, and Crete has been an island for over five million years, meaning that the people who lived there, somehow sailed to Crete.
Between 2008-09, a Greek-American scientific team found in the southern coastal location of Plakias hundreds of stone tools, which are very similar to tools used by Homo erectus over at least a million years ago, and Neanderthals 130,000 years ago.
One of the investigators claimed that these tools are indicative of Neanderthals’ maritime migrations from the Near and Middle East to Europe. An attempt to date gear has led to an estimate of at least 130,000 years of age, but doubts about their age remained, which did not help to dissipate the skepticism of other scientists for such a bold theory.
Then there were other finds of probably Neanderthal origin, such as Stelida on Naxos, which, even in the last Ice Age, when the water level was lower, was estimated to be accessible only by sea. There, another Greek-Canadian team, discovered in a flint quarry hundreds of stone tools (more sophisticated than those of Crete in their method of construction), among which hand-tools that resemble tools made by both Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens 50,000 to 200,000 years ago.
The dating process of these tools is still in progress and is expected with interest. It can not be ruled out to confirm their age and thus give more credibility points to the assumption that there were even more ancient seafarers in the Aegean.
Other paleolithic tools have also been discovered on the Ionian Islands, mainly on Zakynthos and Kefalonia. This, according to the archaeologists, shows that people were going to the islands much earlier than initially thought.
But for some islands, there are doubts about when they were cut off from the land and became islands. Such as e.g. is the case of Lemnos, where archaeologist Nikos Efstratios of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki believes he has found a Paleolithic hunting camp which is over 10,000 years old.

What is at the root of the crisis? Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves. When socialist President Hugo Chávez was in power, from 1999 until his death in 2013, he used oil money to finance social programmes. But the opposition says much of the income was lost to mismanagement, patronage, and corruption.
Critics accuse Mr Chavez's successor, President Nicolás Maduro, of using increasingly authoritarian tactics as the economy collapsed, prompting hundreds of thousands of people to flee abroad. Last year dozens of protesters were killed in clashes during protests against hyperinflation and food shortages.
Mr Maduro was re-elected in May, in a poll boycotted by the opposition and criticised by the UN and other international bodies.
What does the report say? The UN Human Rights Council alleges that extra-judicial killings were carried out by officers involved with the Operations for the Liberation of the People, ostensibly a crime-reduction initiative.
These officers may have killed more than 500 people between July 2015 and March 2017 as a way to showcase crime-reduction results, it says. They are alleged to have faked evidence to make it look as though the victims died in exchanges of fire.
UN investigators have been denied access to Venezuela. They made their findings from interviews with about 150 witnesses and victims contacted through "internet-based technologies", the report says.
A number of interview with exiles were also held in Geneva, it adds. Some of the other evidence comes from former Attorney General Luisa Ortega. She was fired by Mr Maduro last year and went into exile. The report says that under her replacement, investigations into allegations of abuses have virtually stopped.
Did the UN mention the country's economic problems? Yes. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein accused Venezuela of failing to acknowledge the depth of its crisis.
"When a box of hypertension pills costs more than the monthly minimum wage and baby milk formula more than two months' salary, but protesting against such an impossible situation can land you in jail, the extreme injustice of it all is stark," he added. Mr Hussein suggested the International Criminal Court could become involved.

The pair appeared before the US district court in San Jose on Friday, hours after Holmes stepped down as CEO of the company, and were charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud. Both were released on $500,000 bail and ordered to surrender their passports.
“This indictment alleges a corporate conspiracy to defraud financial investors,” said the FBI special agent John Bennett. “This conspiracy misled doctors and patients about the reliability of medical tests that endangered health and lives.”
Theranos was founded in 2003 with the goal of revolutionising blood testing. It received glowing media coverage and raised more than $700m from investors on the back of the promise that it had invented a machine that could conduct hundreds of laboratory tests from a single finger-prick of blood. The tests were rolled out in Walgreens stores in California and Arizona and the company’s valuation soared to $9bn.
However, a series of Wall Street Journal articles in 2015 revealed that most of the tests Theranos claimed to be doing with its Edison machines were being carried out by traditional machines bought from other companies.
When the company’s proprietary devices were used for testing, the results were found to be less reliable and accurate than those produced by traditional machines. After scrutiny from health regulators, Theranos retracted two years of blood tests and agreed to reimburse 76,000 Arizonans who used its services.
The indictment outlines these issues as well as alleged problems relating to the way Theranos presented its business to investors, including ambitious revenue projections of $1bn in 2015.
“In truth, Holmes and Balwani knew that Theranos had and would generate only modest revenues, roughly a few hundred thousand dollars or so in 2014 and 2015,” states the indictment. It also alleges that the pair defrauded doctors and patients by making false claims about the effectiveness of Theranos’s blood tests, including those for calcium, potassium, HIV and diabetes.
“Based on these representations, many hundreds of patients paid or caused their medical insurance companies to pay Theranos for blood tests and test results, sometimes following referrals from their defrauded doctors,” the indictment states.
The criminal charges come three months after Holmes was charge in a civil suit by the Securities and Exchange Commission with “massive fraud”. Theranos and Holmes agreed to settle the charges without admitting or denying any wrongdoing.
She paid a $500,000 penalty, returned millions of shares to the company and relinquished her company voting power under the terms of the settlement. She was also banned from serving as an officer or director of a public company for 10 years.

A creature that lived in the Earth’s oceans 500 million years ago and whose fossil was recently discovered has been named after former President Obama, USA Today reported.
The creature was given the scientific name Obamus coronatus in honor of the president.
The prehistoric animal was disc-shaped and was only about half an inch long. It had raised spiral grooves on its surface and spent its whole life embedded on the ocean floor, scientists from the University of California-Riverside said.

FBI Special Agent, who was anticipated to expose the extent of Clinton and Obama malpractice and corruption in the "Operation Fast and Furious" cover-up before a US Federal Grand Jury, has been found dead at his home.
The FBI official's wife was also found dead at the scene with the couple both being murdered using the 52-year-old agent's own gun.
Special Agent David Raynor was “stabbed multiple times” and “shot twice with his own weapon,” according to local media reports.
According to the Baltimore Sun: Authorities, who are offering a $215,000 reward for tips in Suiter’s killing, have struggled to understand what happened. The detective was shot with his own gun, which was found at the scene.
Two other shots were fired from the gun, and Davis said there were signs of a brief struggle.

Such a plot would prove rich territory — or a landmine — for anyone interested in how gender and sexuality develop.
“Think of the scientific possibilities!” Slate wrote in 1997. “Finally, we could tease apart nature and nurture and see whether men and women differed because of how they were brought up as children.”
Yet, this place — Salinas, a small village in the Dominican Republic — actually exists. And though scientists have been aware of the genetic mutation that causes this curious condition for decades, the little-known, but extensively documented, story is the subject of a new BBC piece called “The Extraordinary Story of the Guevedoces.”
The translation of “guevedoce”: “penis at 12.”
“I never liked to dress as a girl and when they bought me toys for girls I never bothered playing with them,” Johnny, formerly Felicita, told the BBC. “When I saw a group of boys I would stop to play ball with them.”
Johnny is not alone. As first observed by a Cornell University researcher in the 1970s, one in about 90 children in and around Salinas are affected by the mutation, which leads to low levels of an enzyme called 5-α-reductase that typically spurs growth of the penis in utero. In guevedoces, this growth is delayed until puberty. And, after their transformation, many of the newly minted boys prove heterosexual.
“So the boys, despite having an XY chromosome, appear female when they are born,” the BBC explained. “At puberty, like other boys, they get a second surge of testosterone. This time the body does respond and they sprout muscles, testes and a penis.”
Some guevedoces are tormented — called “nasty things, bad words,” as one told the BBC.
“When she turned five I noticed that whenever she saw one of her male friends she wanted to fight with him,” the mother of Carla — “on the brink of changing into Carlos” at 7, as the BBC put it — said. “Her muscles and chest began growing. You could see she was going to be a boy.”
Though the case of the guevedoces, for some researchers, showed that nature is more important than nurture in directing sexuality, an American pharmaceutical company by the name of Merck took the research to an unexpected place. Guevedoces generally have small prostates. If 5-α-reductase could be blocked by a drug, could prostate growth in adult men be inhibited?
Yes, Merck decided. The company developed the drug finasteride, more commonly known as Propecia, now used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostate growth.
Some men reported the drug had strange effects on their sex drive.
“I’d be with a sexy woman, and there was just no interest at all on my part,” one patient said in 2011. “If anything, it was almost like I felt mild repulsion.”
But the guevedoces were not just of interest to Big Pharma. In a 1998 report, the Hastings Center, devoted to ethical issues in medicine, discussed how the very concept of a third sex had changed the vocabulary and mindset of Salinas when it comes to gender.
“The sexually ambiguous child is born not into a world divided up into male and female, but into a world divided into male, female, and guevedoce,” the report read. “Different concepts, different facts of nature.”
