Weinsier said reporters were told to get down.
Deputies said an active search was underway amid reports of additional shots fired at the airport.
Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, whose district includes the airport, said the shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight who had a checked gun in his luggage. LaMarca said the shooter claimed his bag, took out the gun, loaded it in a bathroom and came out firing.

'US Vice President Joe Biden has told Donald Trump to "grow up" as he criticised his "absolutely mindless" attacks on intelligence agencies.
Mr Biden was speaking after Mr Trump cast more doubt on allegations Russia meddled in the presidential election. Mr Trump's remarks in a series of tweets come before he is due to be briefed on a report by intelligence agencies about the hacking allegations on Friday.
An unclassified version of the report will be made public next week. Already downplaying the report, Mr Trump questioned why the FBI was denied access to certain computer servers.
"The Democratic National Committee would not allow the FBI to study or see its computer info after it was supposedly hacked by Russia......," he tweeted.
"So how and why are they so sure about hacking if they never even requested an examination of the computer servers? What is going on?"
Mr Biden hit out at Mr Trump for failing to acknowledge the expertise of the intelligence community. "For a president not to have confidence in, not to be prepared to listen to, the myriad intelligence agencies, from defence intelligence to the CIA, is absolutely mindless," he said in an interview with the PBS network.
"The idea that you may know more than the intelligence community knows - it's like saying I know more about physics than my professor. "I didn't read the book, I just know I know more."

'A man armed with a kitchen knife has stabbed nearly a dozen children at a kindergarten in southern China, wounding at least three of them seriously.
Local authorities said on Wednesday that the man "sneaked into" the school in the southern autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang mid-afternoon and stabbed the children before being detained at the scene by police.
State broadcaster CCTV said on social media that the assailant allegedly climbed a wall to enter the facility. According to the official Xinhua news agency, three children were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Police have identified the attacker as Qin Peng'an, a man from Nanshan village that is under the jurisdiction of Pingxiang city. An initial police investigation found that Qin felt bullied in the village so he stabbed the children out of anger and revenge.
In recent years, China has had several incidents of assailants entering schools and stabbing children. Most of these violent attacks are carried out by people with vendettas against society.
In February last year, a knife-wielding assailant wounded at least 10 children in the southern island province of Hainan, before committing suicide.
In 2014, a man stabbed three children and a teacher to death at a primary school. The teacher had refused to enroll his daughter. A man killed two relatives and then slashed 11 people outside a school in China's commercial hub, Shanghai, in March 2013.

This might should have gone in the rant forum, but not really. I am seriously concerned about some things.
Over the past few weeks, I have posted some things on Face Book about my political views, and I was really startled at some of the replies.
I even posted videos and articles with documents to back up my claims for what a future with Hillary as president would be like, and things that Obama has brought into our country that go against our constitution, and how allowing Hillary in would continue bringing in the NWO.
Of course, I was attacked by Hillary's brain-washed herd in no time flat! It started to get really heated, so I took the thread down. These were people I've been associated with for years, turning on me like a pack of wolves on a fresh killed deer!
I was astonished that people could be so (bleep) blind! And, no, I don't think any of them took the time to look at the links/videos I posted.
What I've noticed lately is that the left is accusing Trump of everything Hillary was guilty of, and talking about how Trump will cause a Nuclear War, and all kinds of crazy talk. In short, they are afraid Trump will cause the same things we (on the right) feared from Hillary winning.
Just today I saw a headline on Yahoo! News where they were accusing him of treason!
Are you kidding me?! After everything Obama and Hillary have done, they have the nerve to say a word like "treason" in the same sentence with Trump?!
That's what brought on this semi-rant that I wanted to post.
