Free Speech In Wakanda... I mean Uganda, Is A Problem.
Posted by: BIAD - 07-02-2018, 10:03 PM - Forum: All about Africa - Replies (2)

Quote:Uganda imposes social media tax to curb 'gossip'

A government plan to force Ugandans to pay a tax to cover the damage caused by
social media gossip has been met with condemnation.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been clamping down on the internet.

'The Ugandan government has introduced a tax on people using social media, angering citizens
who think it is an attack on free speech. Users of sites including Facebook were warned in March
that they would be taxed by Yoweri Museveni, Uganda's president since 1986.

Mr Museveni had reportedly complained about online gossip in a letter which encouraged the country's
finance minister to levy a tax to address the consequences of social media.

Users in the county are required to pay a daily tax of 200 Ugandan shillings, roughly 4p, in order to
access social media -in addition to data fees.

Telecommunications service providers issued a joint statement explaining that the tax would be charged on
"over the top services" including Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Ladislaus Rwakafuuzi, a prominent human rights lawyer in Uganda, said that people in the country were
"bitter" with the tax, which "was brought in bad faith".
"The reasons for it were anti-people, were anti-social, not development-oriented," Mr Rwakafuuzi said.

The government said it hoped to collect 400bn Ugandan shillings over the course of the financial year through
the tax. Its own figures state that about 40% of Uganda's 41 million people are active internet users.

"I am not going to propose a tax on internet use for educational, research or reference purposes," Mr Museveni
said. Uganda is not the only African country to have implemented financial costs for web users.

In Tanzania, the government passed rules making it mandatory for bloggers and administrators of other forums
like YouTube channels to register with the regulator - and pay $900 (£647) for the privilege.

People accessing social media services with a mobile phone in Uganda are charged in what the country's finance
minister described as a good way to "maintain the security of the country".

The Ugandan government's criticism of social media use rose sharply in February 2016, when Ugandans voted
in a tight presidential election. During the course of the election, officials blocked access to Facebook and Twitter,
citing unspecified security threats.

That poll, won by the incumbent Mr Museveni, was blighted by allegations of fraud and the late delivery of voting
materials in areas in which the president's opposition was expected to have a strong turnout...'

July 4 attack at parade in Cleveland Prevented
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 07-02-2018, 09:26 PM - Forum: Breaking News - Replies (1)

Can you imagine what our country would be like without ICE?  I'm not sure they were involved in this, but my bet would say they were. Yet, there are those out there marching to take ICE down.  These people are stupid beyond belief!   minusculeheadbanging

FBI: Man scouted for July 4 attack at parade in Cleveland

Quote:An American-born citizen who federal authorities say recently scouted locations in Cleveland to attack people watching Fourth of July fireworks and talked of carrying out additional bombings has been charged with trying to support terrorism.
Federal authorities said Monday that Demetrius Pitts, 48, had repeatedly expressed his support for al-Qaida for more than a year and talked about setting off bombs at a July 4 parade and later in his hometown of Philadelphia.

Pitts, of Maple Heights, was due in federal court Monday in Cleveland. There were no court documents listing an attorney for him.
He was arrested Sunday after meeting an undercover agent and charged with attempted support of a terrorist organization.
FBI Special Agent Stephen Anthony said it was not clear how close Pitts was to carrying out his threats, but he said authorities couldn't sit back and wait to find out.

Authorities first began watching Pitts in 2017, after he made Facebook posts threatening violence against the U.S., Anthony said.
He later began meeting with an undercover agent and discussed several different ways to carry out an attack, according to court documents. Pitts also talked about his hatred for the U.S. military, Anthony said.

An undercover agent in late June gave Pitts a bus pass and cellphone that he thought were from al-Qaida supporters so that he could go downtown and look for locations to carry out his attacks, according to a complaint filed by authorities.
Pitts shot videos of potential targets such as a federal building and U.S. Coast Guard station and then turned over the phone last week, believing the photos and videos would be given to al-Qaida members, the document said.

In recent weeks, Pitts also talked about wanting to travel to Philadelphia, and on Sunday told the undercover agent he wanted to conduct reconnaissance for a future attack using a truck packed with explosives, similar to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, authorities said in the complaint.

Anthony said Pitts had been radicalized in the U.S. and that he had no information that Pitts had traveled out of the country.

I'm so happy they caught this guy before something terrible happened.  Great work guys/gals.   minusculeclap

Hojjat al-Islam Mojtaba Zolnour, who is chairman of Iran’s parliamentary nuclear committee and a member of its national security and foreign affairs committee, made the allegations during an interview with the country’s Etemad newspaper, cited by the country’s Fars News agency.

Quote:France charges 10 ultra-right suspects over plot to attack Muslims.

'French authorities have charged 10 suspected far-right extremists in connection with an alleged plot
to attack Muslims, a judicial source said Thursday.
The nine men and one woman aged 32 to 69 were arrested in raids across France on Saturday.

They appeared before a judge on Wednesday evening and were charged with "criminal terrorist conspiracy",
the source said. Several were also charged with violations of firearms laws and the manufacture or possession
of explosive devices.

Police have linked the ten to a little-known group called Action des Forces Operationnelles (Operational Forces
Action), which urges French people to combat Muslims, or what it calls "the enemy within".

The suspects had an "ill-defined plan to commit a violent act targeting people of the Muslim faith", a source
close to the investigation told AFP on Monday. Rifles, handguns and homemade grenades were found during
the raids in the Paris area, the Mediterranean island of Corsica and the western Charentes-Maritimes region.

Prosecutors said in a statement Wednesday that 36 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition were seized,
as well as items in one suspect's home that could be used in the manufacture of TATP explosives.
The suspects include a retired police officer, identified only as Guy S., who was the alleged leader of the group,
according to a source close to the investigation. The group also includes a former soldier.

France remains on high alert following a wave of jihadist attacks which have killed more than 240 people since 2015.
Officials have urged people not to confuse the actions of radicalised individuals with those of France's estimated
six million Muslims --but anti-Islamic violence is on the rise.

The "Guerre de France" (War for France) website of the shadowy Operational Forces Action depicts an apocalyptic
battle scene under the Eiffel Tower, and claims to prepare "French citizen-soldiers for combat on national territory".

France's TF1 television has said the group planned to target radicalised imams and Islamist prisoners after their
release from jail, as well as veiled women in the street chosen at random.

France registered 72 violent anti-Muslim acts last year, up from 67 in 2016...'
France24:

'...urges French people to combat Muslims, or what it calls "the enemy within"...' What an outlandish idea!
What evidence is there that an opposing ideology that attacks the culture of the country it dwells in, is a so-called
enemy?!

Oh wait.

'The man suspected of helping Paris terror suspect Salah Abdeslam escape the French capital after the 2015
attacks has been released and placed under judicial supervision in Brussels. Ali Oulkadi is believed to have
driven Abdeslam - the suspected sole survivor - across the border into Belgium the day after the attacks.

The Paris prosecutors' office said on Tuesday that the conditions of Oulkadi's release back to the Belgian capital
included regularly reporting to police and a curfew.
He is also banned from leaving the country, making contact with a list of individuals and possessing a weapon.

It comes after Abdeslam told investigators earlier this year that his friend knew nothing about the attacks.
Abdeslam, 28, is in solitary confinement in a French prison, awaiting trial for his alleged role in the killings.

A total of 130 people died in a series of coordinated suicide bombings and shootings at the Stade de France,
the Bataclan concert hall and at bars and restaurants in Paris on the night of 13 November 2015.
Abdeslam's brother Brahim was among the suicide bombers...'
SKY News:

The driver suspected of taking a known-terrorist to another country on the day of the attacks and had a brother
who was a suicide-bomber is released with a 'not-to-do' list.

The Other 'ICE' Problem, The One At The South Pole.
Posted by: BIAD - 07-01-2018, 05:23 PM - Forum: The Great Climate Change Debate - Replies (3)

Quote:Active volcano discovered beneath Antarctic ice sheet could be contributing to rapidly melting glacier.

'Wild card' volcanic activity may add to climate change-induced sea level rise.

'An active volcano has been unexpectedly discovered beneath a rapidly vanishing glacier in Antarctica
by a team of scientists studying the melting ice shelf.

While rising temperatures in the polar oceans are still by far the biggest contributor to Antarctic melting,
volcanoes buried deep beneath the ice are a “wild card” that are likely also playing a role.
Scientists have warned this hidden source of heat must be taken into consideration when predicting
future sea level rise...'

Ring Gore, this is problematic. A natural inconvenience of a narrative.

Quote:'...West Antarctica is thought to contain well over 100 volcanoes, but finding them and understanding their
contribution to ice melting has proved difficult. During a survey conducted in 2014, a team of British and
American scientists stumbled across one of them while exploring the effect of warming ocean waters on
the ice shelf.

Chemical data from water samples revealed an active source of volcanic heat beneath the Pine Island
glacier, which is the fastest-melting glacier in the entire region. Though there have been no eruptions in
Antarctica for more than 2,000 years, the heat from this hidden volcano could be contributing to this rapid
decline.

“The west Antarctic ice sheet has existed for tens of thousands of years and it has happily coexisted with
volcanic activity happening within and underneath it,” Dr Rob Larter, a marine geophysicist at the British
Antarctic Survey told The Independent.

“Because of the episodic nature of volcanic activity it’s something that’s very difficult to factor into future
projections –it’s a wild card.” Measuring volcanism in Antarctica is problematic as the traditional means
of assessing volcanoes –heat and smoke –are difficult to assess in sources buried deep below the ice...'

See...? I told yer'! I'm waiting for a comment about Trump.

Quote:'...In their current study, published in the journal Nature Communications, a team led by Professor Brice
Loose of the University of Rhode Island measured a form of helium in the water they described as
“a fingerprint for volcanism”.

Recent analysis revealed that ice melting in Antarctica –particularly west Antarctica –is taking place
faster than ever before. The Pine Island glacier is particularly unstable, and made headlines in 2017
when it lost a chunk of ice four times the size of Manhattan.

“The discovery of volcanoes beneath the Antarctic ice sheet means that there is an additional source of
heat to melt the ice, lubricate its passage toward the sea, and add to the melting from warm ocean waters,”
said Professor Karen Heywood of the University of East Anglia, who was the expedition’s chief scientist.

“It will be important to include this in our efforts to estimate whether the Antarctic ice sheet might become
unstable and further increase sea level rise.”  Dr Robert Bingham, a glaciologist at the University of Edinburgh
who has discovered dozens of Antarctic volcanoes, said the melting was probably not a major contributor.

“I don’t think people should look at volcanoes underneath west Antarctica as a serious concern for causing
instability,” he said. However, Dr Bingham, who was not involved in the new study, suggested that as climate
change-induced melting increases, volcanic activity could also increase.

“If you have got thinning ice cover over a volcanic region there is every reason to suggest it will increase
the volcanism,” he said. As the pressure exerted on the mantle by the glacier decreases and allows more
heat to escape, this could cause a feedback loop in which the melt rate continues to increase.

The researchers behind the new study said understanding the rate of sea level rise due to a melting Antarctica
will be crucial in the coming years, and monitoring the region’s volcanoes will be a key part in this process...'

11 Dead Family Members, Indian Occult Question.

A curious and tragic case in a world where it seems occultism is becoming the norm.

Quote:Occult Angle Suspected After Family Of 11 Found Dead In Delhi Home.

Burari deaths: Delhi police filed a murder case after they found a 75-year-old woman in the family,
whose body was found in the room, was strangulated

'NEW DELHI:
A family of 11 were found dead at their home in north Delhi's Burari this morning.
Ten of the people --among whom were two teenagers and six women --were found hanging in the courtyard.
The body of another woman, a 77-year-old, was found in a room. She had been strangled.

On the basis of ligature marks, the police have filed a case of murder. It is suspected that one member of the
family killed the rest and then committed suicide. The police are investigating the possibility of the deaths
being linked to occult practices.

The bodies were found hanging from an iron grill, blindfolded and mouths taped shut. Only the family dog was
alive. That the dog did not bark reinforced the police suspicion of murder, sources said.  Also, the house was
not ransacked. The women were found wearing gold jewellery, the police said.

During a search of the house, certain handwritten notes were found, which point to the observance of some
definite "spiritual or mystical practices by the family," a communique from the police said in the evening.

"Coincidentally, the notes have strong similarity with the manner in which the mouths, eyes etc of the deceased
were tied and taped," the communique read.

Those who died have been identified as Mrs Narayan Devi, 77, her sons Bhavnesh Bhatia, 50, and Lalit Bhatia,
45, daughter-in-laws Savita Bhatia, 48 and Teena Bhatia, 42, her daughter Pratibha, 57, grandchildren Priyanka,
33, Nitu, 25, Monu, 23, Dhruv, 15 and Shivam, 15.

The Bhatia family, who are originally from Rajasthan, ran a grocery shop and plywood business a few steps from
their double-storey home in Burari's Sant Nagar. They have been living in the area for the last two decades.

Every morning, their shop would open by 6, but the shutters remain closed till 7.30 am today, a neighbour went to
check on the family. Finding the door open, he went inside discovered the bodies.
He informed the police, who rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

The police are currently examining the CCTV footage for clues.

"It is a tragic incident. I have spoken to the police. Let's wait for their investigation to be over," Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal, who visited the spot, said. Earlier, Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari as well as a Congress leader also visited
Burari.

In a video posted by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party or AAP, the neighbours are heard telling Mr Kejriwal that the family
was busy with wedding preparations and were looking forward to it.
The neighbour added that Bhupinder and Lalit Singh, who were brothers, were quite friendly.
"They couldn't have committed suicide. I spoke to Bhupinder last night. He was very happy and there was no sign of
any stress," he told news agency IANS.

A neighbor, Rajendra Tyagi, told reporters that the family was "a very satisfied one" and had no financial problems.
"Even when their kids studied there were no issues of school fees. Till date, they never even had a small argument
with anybody, forget about having grudges with anybody."...'

  Mel's Hole

This is one of the strangest stories I've heard in a long time. It involves a man who called in to the Art Bell Show, CTC, back in the 1990s telling about a very eerie hole he discovered on his land that appeared to have no bottom. The story goes on telling about investigations by researchers, and what they discovered is... just wow!
The story really gets interesting around the 15:00 mark.

Sorry for the computerized voice, but it was the shortest video I could find and covers the most important aspects of this fantastical story.

ICE HSI New York operation makes huge bust!
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 06-30-2018, 03:29 PM - Forum: General News and Events - No Replies

The Democrat politicians want to abolish ICE so they can keep the money flowing into their corrupt pockets that comes from selling illicit goods, weapons, drugs, and human trafficking.  Well, ICE just snatched away a large portion of that money with this latest bust in New York. I expect to see many more across the country as we round up the evil-doers and head them to GITMO.

Quote:ICE HSI New York operation leads to arrests of 3 dozen Darknet vendors selling illicit goods, weapons, drugs seized and more than $23.6 million

NEW YORK — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in New York, working with its law enforcement partners, conducted an unprecedented operation to infiltrate and destabilize U.S. based Darknet vendors operating across multiple markets around the country.

Special Agents of HSI New York, in coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, posed as a money launderer on Darknet market sites, exchanging U.S. currency for virtual currency. Through this operation, HSI New York was able to identify numerous vendors of illicit goods, leading to the opening of more than 90 active cases around the country. The Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section (MLARS) of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, working with more than 40 U.S. Attorney’s Offices throughout the country, coordinated the nationwide investigation of over 65 targets, that lead to the arrest and impending prosecution of more than 35 Darknet vendors.

These results were announced by Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Executive Associate Director Derek Benner of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Special Agent-in-Charge Angel M. Melendez of HSI New York Field Office, Inspector in Charge Peter R. Rendina of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) New York Division, Assistant Director Kenneth Jenkins of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) Office of Investigations, and Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) New York Division.

“The Darknet is ever-changing and increasingly more intricate, making locating and targeting those selling illicit items on this platform more complicated. But in this case, HSI special agents were able to walk amongst those in the cyber underworld to find those vendors who sell highly addictive drugs for a profit,” said Acting HSI Executive Associate Director Benner. “The veil has been lifted. HSI has infiltrated the Darknet, and together with its law enforcement partners nationwide, it has proven, once again, that every criminal is within arm’s reach of the law.”

“Criminals who think that they are safe on the Darknet are wrong,” said Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein. “We can expose their networks, and we are determined to bring them to justice. Today, we arrested more than 35 alleged Darknet vendors. We seized their weapons, their drugs, and $23.6 million of their ill-gotten gains. This nationwide enforcement effort will reduce the supply of deadly drugs like fentanyl that are killing an unprecedented number of Americans. I want to thank our federal prosecutors, and the dedicated federal agents with DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, the Postal Inspection Service, and the Secret Service for their outstanding work.”

“Postal Inspectors and their law enforcement partners will spare no resource or expense to shine a light on the sale and distribution of illicit and dangerous items on the Darknet, that serve to destroy the lives of many through addiction and despair,” said Inspector in Charge Rendina. “Today’s announcement of our law enforcement partnership and operation sends a strong message to those who choose this illegal path, we are watching and will bring you to justice for your crimes against the American public.”

“The Secret Service is proud to work with our law enforcement partners to help combat one of the largest threats to the U.S. financial infrastructure, money laundering with virtual currency,” said U.S. Secret Service Assistant Director Jenkins. “The Secret Service continues to adapt along with these cyber criminals to maintain our level of success in stopping them.”
“At this crucial time of unprecedented drug related deaths, one of the greatest threats we face is cyber drug trafficking,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Hunt.  “Because the Darknet invites criminals into our homes, and provides unlimited access to illegal commerce, law enforcement is taking steps to identify and arrest those involved. I applaud all the agencies who participated in this groundbreaking investigation.”

The extensive operation, which culminated in four weeks of more than 100 enforcement actions around the country, resulted in the following:
  • Federal arrests of more than 35 Darknet vendors who engaged in tens of thousands of sales of illicit goods;
  • Execution of 70 search warrants, resulting in the seizure of massive amounts of illegal narcotics, including 333 bottles of liquid synthetic opioids, over 100,000 tramadol pills, 100 grams of fentanyl, more than 24 kilograms of Xanax, and additional seizures of Oxycodone, MDMA, cocaine, LSD, marijuana, and a psychedelic mushroom grow found in a residence;
  • Seizure of more than 100 firearms, including handguns, assault rifles, and a grenade launcher;
  • Seizure of five vehicles that were purchased with illicit proceeds and/or used to facilitate criminal activity;
  • Seizure of more than $3.6 million in U.S. currency and gold bars;
  • Seizure of nearly 2,000 Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, with an approximate value of more than $20 million;
  • Confiscation of 15 pill presses, which are used to create illegal synthetic opioids; and
  • Seizure of Bitcoin mining devices, computer equipment, and vacuum sealers.

601 people, including doctors, charged in opioid abuse crackdown
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 06-30-2018, 01:23 AM - Forum: General Health Topics - Replies (1)

The opioid crisis is a huge problem, and has such a negative affect on families who have a member who is addicted.

I've had friends and family both who have suffered from this addiction. I've seen people steal from family members to get money to buy more (on the street) than what their doctors give them because they abuse them and run out before their next prescription can be filled.
It stinks, so I'm glad to see President Trump cracking down on these people responsible for the emotional pain these pills inflict on families, not to mention the fraud occurring in the government health-care programs.

Quote:
  • The U.S. Justice Department announced charges against 601 people including doctors for taking part in health-care frauds.
  • The frauds allegedly resulted in over $2 billion in losses and contributed to the nation’s opioid epidemic in some cases.
  • The hundreds of suspects charged included 162 doctors and other suspects charged for their roles in prescribing and distributing addictive opioid painkillers.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivers remarks at the Department of Justice on February 28, 2017 in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday announced charges against 601 people including doctors for taking part in health-care frauds that resulted in over $2 billion in losses and contributed to the nation’s opioid epidemic in some cases.
The arrests came in dozens of unrelated prosecutions the Justice Department announced together as part of an annual health-care fraud takedown.

The hundreds of suspects charged included 162 doctors and other suspects charged for their roles in prescribing and distributing addictive opioid painkillers.

Though many of the cases also involved a variety of schemes to fraudulently bill government health-care programs, officials sought in the latest crackdown to emphasize their efforts to combat the nation’s opioid epidemic.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the epidemic caused more than 42,000 deaths from opioid overdoses in the United States in 2016.

While the Justice Department has been conducting investigations into some opioid manufacturers like OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma, the cases stemming from the sweep did not focus on wrongdoing by major corporations.

Many of the criminal cases announced on Thursday involved charges against medical professionals who authorities said had contributed to the country’s opioid epidemic by participating in the unlawful distribution of prescription painkillers.
Those charged included a Florida anesthesiologist accused of running a “pill mill;” a Pennsylvania doctor alleged to have billed an insurer for illegally prescribed opioids; and a Texas pharmacy chain owner and two other people accused of improperly filling orders for opioids that were sold to drug couriers.

The Justice Department also announced other cases unrelated to opioids, including schemes to bill the government health-care programs Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare as well as private insurers for medically unnecessary prescription drugs and compounded medications.
