It was all very hush-hush; didn't find out until we were adults.

I can identify. My great grand dad was a ne'er-do-well, but we didn't know how bad until we were grown. Grandpa used to say he was a "professional stump sitter", because he'd sit on a stump and watch the kids do all the work. But when I grew up, I started hearing the rest of the story. He was apparently a hard drinker, prone to go about armed, and had a penchant for house breaking and thieving. He would even steal any grocery money his wife set back, and take it to buy more liquor. When their kids grew up, they'd give her money to live on, and he would steal that for liquor if she didn't hide it well enough.

He died in a mental hospital, with the story to us kids being he got hit by a bus and "addled". It wasn't until we were grown that we found out the real deal - he was probably sent there to "dry out", and did not survive the process.

.
Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’
