The key is to be "The Crazy Old Hermit" - everyone knows you're there, but are afraid to screw around too much for fear of what you might do. They don't know your business then, because they are too afraid to watch. It's nice to be nice, but there is a lot to be said for cringing, fear-filled respect.
"Slipping up" and allowing a single person to witness you burying a wine bottle full of piss and brass pins doesn't hurt, either...
