Who was the 4th in your golf outing?

Great question actually!

I had forgotten who it was last night when I wrote that, but after thinking about it for a bit last night I remembered.  His name was Dave Kocourek.  (ret. Tight End for the Oakland Raiders #83 in '68).

How did you get into a round of golf with those 3 people?

Heh, pure and total luck!

I was a kid, about 11 at the time, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.  Full disclosure, I pretty much sucked at golf (in comparison).  I golfed as a hobby and for fun.  LOL...how I happened to be where I was at the time was...I also just happened to have the keys to one of the golf carts and had just come back from the driving range!  They were actually practicing for a Pro-Am Tournament which was to be held the next day.  I was just along for the ride...with stars in my eyes of course.  I shot a 68...<polishing fingernails on shirt>...

...on the 1st hole!!!  LOL!  Not really, but it sure felt that way.

I did not play a full round, and no, I did not keep score.  But I did play golf with them, and because of the way the country club rules worked, I was technically part of one of the two the 'foursomes'.  (i.e. two golfers per cart, two carts per foursome, and two foursomes in play).  Bob Hope and Jack Nicklaus moved between the four carts during the round, just being friendly and social.  Both were/are absolutely fantastic, down to Earth, people!

I think I was the comedic element of the group.

Course - Marco Island Country Club (now called the 'Island Country Club')
Location - Marco Island, Florida
Year - 1974

ETA - BTW, Bob Hope was a hell of a golfer, and easily could have been a Pro! A true "natural" at the sport, something you don't see every day (and/or very rarely)!

Question from the gallery:

How did you, personally, get the autographed ball?

Hey no cutting!

That was my next question.   minusculebonker

More specifically, how did you acquire the ball that was to be signed in person by the '68 Tigers world series starters?

Jinmi has my last question...so I'll ask another:

On the golf with Hope and Nicklaus...
Are you certain it was 1974?

No, not 100%.  It was right around then.  Could have been '73, but I'm sure it wasn't after '75 (because '75 is a reference point for a huge turning point in my younger life, so I remember things in "pre-'75" and "post-'75" terms).

I will explain the meaning of that statement later when I give the answer to this game.

It may surprise some here.  Especially, some ATS'ers.

Don't worry, nobody will judge you...many ATS'ers were also abducted by aliens in 1975.

I wasn't even born yet in 1975 and yet I look back fondly on that year. They don't probe like they used to

I was sitting in a box seat right behind the Tigers dugout (literally had my feet propped up on the back of the dugout).  We had annual season tickets to all Tigers home games.  Although just a little kid, I was a big Tigers fan at the time.  My idol back then was the Tigers catcher, a guy by the name of Bill Freehan.  I had tried all season long to get Freehan's autograph (a program, a mitt, a jersey with his number on it, etc., you name it).  He just blew me off every time.  He was kind of an arrogant SOB.

Right before the post season I had all but given up trying to get Freehan's autograph.  I don't remember if it was the very last game, but it was near the end, I tried one last time.  I'd always been very polite about it, only asking for his autograph at appropriate moments like before or after a game, or at other convenient times (for him), but he just blew me off.  On this particular occasion it was the end of the game.  The 3rd Base Coach came toward the dugout and my Dad's friend knew this guy, so he called him over.  He explained how I'd been trying all season to get Freehan's autograph, and asked him if he could go in the locker room and get him to sign a kids glove I'd brought with me.  He said he'd to one better than that because he'd seen me trying to get his autograph all year too.  So he walked over to an American League umpire and asked him for an official game ball.  He told me to stay put, and ducked into the dugout.

When he returned he was holding the ball by the laces.  He said for me to be careful as he handed me the ball.  He said the ink takes a while to dry on the treated leather.  Of course, I only partially listened because I was so shocked at what he had handed me.  Every single Tiger on the starting roster had signed the ball, including the GM and all the Base Coaches.  When I grabbed the ball, I smeared Gates Brown's signature.  It was then I, and everyone around me, realized it was an authentic NLB baseball that had just been signed by the Detroit Tigers who would go on to win the World Series that year!

I was pretty young, so the significance of that moment didn't really soak in to my thick kid-skull at that moment, but it would in the following years.

That very ball sits in my office, in a glass protective case...and I am looking at it as I type this reply!

This story almost makes me cry even to this day.

What state(s) did you grow up in as a kid?

Heh, very, VERY, good question!

My typical response is "Wyoming", which is partially true.  I consider Wyoming my "home", but I spent much of the first 12 years of my life in Michigan.

From my perspective, I "grew up" in Wyoming, but I lived in both Wyoming and Michigan (at different times).

The "REST" of this story is shaping up to be a real shocker for some!

Awww...that one is too easy.  We'll ask IAMTAT, but we might need to give you another question.

Answer - My parents had a vacation/2nd home in Florida.  Marco Island, to be specific.  They had owned property there since the early 60's, long before Marco Island became the thriving metropolis it is today.

And, seeing as how we're at the last question, let me rephrase that answer...which might give you a hint of where this is all going to head next. ...

Revised Answer - My parents had property in south western Florida, north of the Ten Thousand Islands, when it was still a very cool place. Long before all these ultra-rich MF'ers showed up and F'd everything up.  Long before it became a stronghold of the elites with their noses stuck so far up in the air that the slightest drop of rain would have drowned every last one of them (and so far up the asses of anyone with more money than them that they'd get a black eye if they stopped to quickly).  Long before people scoffed at the "low people" who only could afford to drive Lincoln Continentals, and shit like that.  Back when southern Florida used to be a really cool, rustic and laid back place, not the uptight, stuck up, paradise for the elites that it has become today!

How's that for an answer??

LOL!

IAMTAT,

I will await further instructions on what you would like me to do next.

Do you want me to:

a.) Identify if anyone got the correct answer?

b.) Identify which statement is false?

c.) Hold up, and do something different?

Feel free to pick all which apply.

Thx.

AFTER you answer JINMI's last question...

FAUX and JINMI can then state their choice for the lie.

THEN you can reveal the lie...with any explanations you may want to include.
