How would such a creature hold a hammer or a drill to build a starship?

Lack of opposable thumbs is the only reason Dolphins don't rule the world - they're a lot smarter than humans are.

So True!   


We'll never hear anymore about this discovery if it's and actual alien hand.
If so, here's some idea's about the Thumb.
I don't know that the entire wrist and hand is there, maybe the area where the Thumb would protrude is missing or maybe these is nothing more than and Slave to the Aliens, a thumb wouldn't stop it from heavy lifting or pushing an object into place.
