Winter Storm Creates Chaos on East Coast, U.S.
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 11-16-2018, 08:32 PM - Forum: General News and Events - Replies (4)

But, but... I thought people up north knew how to drive in snow.  ???   tinybighuh
Aren't they the ones always making fun of us in the south for freaking out over a snowflake?   tinylaughing
It's all in what you get used to, and we here in the south are NOT used to driving in snow, so yes, it gets a little scary for us sometimes.

I hate to hear about the deaths this storm has caused, seven as of now. I hope more don't die, being that the power is out for more than 300,000 residents.  That's a lot of people!

PLEASE, if anyone is in this storm, check on your neighbors and especially any elderly to make sure they are okay.

Quote:A fall snowstorm wreaked havoc on the East Coast Thursday, stranding New York City commuters, canceling more than 7,000 flights, knocking out power to more than 300,000 residents and forcing children to stay at school overnight.

The latest
The rough weather has contributed to at least seven deaths in the U.S., The Associated Press said.
In Connecticut, a man was shoveling snow off his car on Interstate-95 when another car spun out of control and hit him, the state police said.

Nor'easter delivering first snowfall of season to eastern US
The snow, sleet and rain caused chaos on roadways across the Northeast, especially during the evening commute.
New Jersey State Police said they responded to over 500 crashes on Thursday while Maryland State Police said they responded to over 400 crashes.

Social media makes light of heavy snowstorm and nightmare commute

In New Jersey, some students from Liberty Middle School had to sleep at their school in West Orange after the storm kept them from getting home Thursday.

Dad James Bondurant told ABC New York station WABC he was "very worried, scared. But once they assured me the kids were safe, it was better for them to be in the school than have to come get them."
He added, "It was too crazy. The cars were abandoned, the traffic was crazy. Just a mess."

Nor'easter leaves some students stranded at schools overnight
Bondurant's son, 13-year-old Isaiah, told WABC he was "very worried. I called my dad, like, multiple times!"
The school tweeted photos of the students' activities during their unexpected sleepover, from late-night ice cream to early morning French toast.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan called Thursday “one of the most challenging nights I've ever seen with the way traffic hit, especially in the Bronx and Manhattan."

New York City saw a 79% increase in 911 calls Thursday and a 162% increase in collisions, said Monahan.
It was a “horrible experience” and “the perfect storm,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told local news channel NY1 on Friday.

WOW!  Glad I'm not there.   tinyhuh  I bet the kids having to stay over night was like one big pajama party. Poor teachers.   tinylaughing

Earth is eating its own oceans
Posted by: guohua - 11-16-2018, 06:02 PM - Forum: Forces of Nature - Replies (6)

Quote:The Earth is eating its own oceans
minusculewtf  Is This About!!!??? I'm waiting for Al Gore to make a Statement that Climate Change is Causing EarthQuakes and Volcanoes and that it is our Fault The Oceans are Slipping beneath the Tectonic Plates!!

Quote:As Earth's tectonic plates dive beneath one another, they drag three times as much water into the planet's interior as previously thought.

Those are the results of a new paper published today (Nov. 14) in the journal Nature. Using the natural seismic rumblings of the earthquake-prone subduction zone at the Marianastrench, where the Pacific plate is sliding beneath the Philippine plate, researchers were able to estimate how much water gets incorporated into the rocks that dive deep below the surface. [In Photos: Ocean Hidden Beneath Earth's Surface]
Ok,, let me get this straight in my head,,,,,as the plates slip below the other plate it drags or absorbs ocean water with it.  tinybighuh
Is there Room? Is there as space there for water to seep through? Is there a suction type action?
No.
Their answer it this.

Quote:Water is stored in the crystalline structure of minerals, Shillington wrote. The liquid gets incorporated into the Earth's crust both when brand-new, piping-hot oceanic plates form and when the same plates bend and crack as they grind under their neighbors. This latter process, called subduction, is the only way water penetrates deep into the crust and mantle, but little is known about how much water moves during the process, study leader Chen Cai of Washington University in St. Louis and his colleagues wrote in their new paper.

"Before we did this study, every researcher knew that water must be carried down by the subducting slab," Cai told Live Science. "But they just didn't know how much water."

The researchers used data picked up by a network of seismic sensors positioned around the central Marianas Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.
The deepest part of the trench is nearly 7 miles (11 kilometers) below sea level. The sensors detect earthquakes and the echoes of earthquakes ringing through Earth's crust like a bell.

Cai and his team tracked how fast those temblors traveled: A slowdown in velocity, he said, would indicate water-filled fractures in rocks and "hydrated" minerals that lock up water within their crystals.
Ok, So just how much water do you think goes under our feet? :smalleyeroll:
Quote:The researchers observed such slowdowns deep into the crust, some 18 miles (30 km) below the surface, Cai said.
Using the measured velocities, along with the known temperatures and pressures found there, the team calculated that the subduction zones pull 3 billion teragrams of water into the crust every million years (a teragram is a billion kilograms).
Three Billion WHAT!?  tinywhat
Is Al Gore going to start announcing we are Draining our Oceans????
Oh, a they are talking about kilograms, that's not so bad is it? minusculethinking

Quote:Seawater is heavy; a cube of this water 1 meter (3.3 feet) long on each side would weigh 1,024 kilograms (2,250 lbs.).
But still, the amount pulled down by subduction zones is mind-boggling.
It's also three times as much water as subduction zones were previously estimated to take in, Cai said.
Holy-Shit Batman,,,, minusculespooked That is a Lot Of Water!!!!!!
Where is it all going? Does it come back?

Quote:And that raises some questions: The water that goes down must come up, usually in the contents of volcanic eruptions.

The new estimate of how much water is going down is larger than estimates of how much is being emitted by volcanos, meaning scientists are missing something in their estimates, the researchers said.
There is no missing water in the oceans, Cai said.
That means the amount of water dragged down into the crust and the amount spouted back out should be about equal.

The fact that they aren't suggests that there's something about how water moves through the interior of Earth that scientists don't yet understand.
Source
OK, there is No Missing Water in our Oceans,,,,, That means Old Al Gore Can Just Go Set Down and Play With Himself.
Unless of-course he wants to say that the missing water is replaced by our melting Ice Caps.  smalltappingfoot

So, what do you think?

They're Not Sending Their Best.

Quote:School Punishes Male Teacher For Refusing To Watch A Naked Girl In The Boys’ Locker Room.

'A Florida school district allowed a self-described transgender female student regular access to the boys’ locker
room, with no advance warning to the boys or their parents.

The first time she walked in, she caught “boys (literally) with their pants down, causing them embarrassment and
concern by the fact that they had been observed changing by an obvious girl,” says a complaint letter to Pasco
County School District from Liberty Counsel, a pro-bono constitutional law firm.

With a “gag order,” school administrators forbade teachers from talking about the change, and ordered a male P.E.
teacher to supervise the potentially undressed girl in the Chasco Middle School locker room, the letter says.
When he refused to “knowingly place himself in a position to observe a minor female in the nude or otherwise in a state
of undress,” administrators told him “he will be transferred to another school as discipline for ‘not doing your job in the
locker room.'”

In an email, an administrator initially threatened to put the male coach on administrative leave, telling him that refusing
to supervise a potentially naked female student would “not be tolerated,”said Liberty Counsel attorney Richard Mast.
The school’s other P.E. teacher, who is female, also objected and was ignored.

Pasco parents have yet to be informed by the school of this situation, yet the transgender student continues to have
open access to private male areas, according to Liberty Counsel. Despite the initial September incident, then legal
contact in October, the elected board for the district with 70,500 students has so far taken no action and administrators
have refused to budge.

“Unfortunately these things are going on across the country, primarily with school psychologists and guidance counselors,”
said Mast. He noted that it’s standard for public schools to pass transgender policies without informing parents, voters, or
taxpayers first. That means the public only hears about it after children have been affected, withholding all opportunities
for parents to prevent their child’s exposure to this kind of sexual indoctrination, confusion, and exploitation.

Last year in a Georgia public school, a five-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a “gender-fluid” male classmate
in the school bathroom after a transgender policy allowed him access. He allegedly pushed her against the wall and repeatedly
jammed his fingers into her genitals while she struggled.

The district refuses to believe the alleged victim and the mother has pulled her daughter from the school, which never notified
her of the incident and maintains its bathroom policy...'

  Idiot Marries Hologram.
Posted by: BIAD - 11-15-2018, 10:10 AM - Forum: General News and Events - Replies (3)

Here's what many would presume is a light-hearted and silly fluff-piece that could be treated in two ways.
1. The pathetic state of young adults perceptions of their reality today.
2. The small subtle steps of accepting artificial intelligence on an equal footing in order to tax companies
that use such technologies rather than employ taxable humans.

Saudi Arabia -the bastion of equal rights, recently made Sophia a citizen of the kingdom ahead of kafala
(migrant) workers who've been living in Saudi all their lives and isn't required to wear an abaya or veil.
Sophia is a robot built to look like a female human.

Now we have a human marrying what basically amounts to a torch, let's just hope his hand is up to the job
on his wedding night.

Quote:Man, 35, reportedly marries computer hologram.

'Surrounded by nearly 40 people, a 35-year-old man reportedly married a virtual hologram earlier this month.
Akihiko Kondo, who works at a middle school in Japan, wed Hatsune Miku, a hologram that was created by
a computer as singing software, on Nov. 4, Reuters reported Wednesday.

The hologram, which takes the form of a teen performer, “is a singing voice synthesizer featured in over
100,000 songs,” according to an online description from Crypton Future Media, the company whose program
the character is modeled on, Reuters reported.

The company did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

While acknowledging the traditional path to marriage, Kondo said he feels “the shape of happiness and love
is different for each person.” “There definitely is a template for happiness, where a real man and woman get
married, have a child and live all together. But I don’t believe such a template can necessarily make everyone
happy,” Kondo told Reuters.

Both Kondo, whose parents were not present at the wedding, and his new bride each have wedding rings,
according to the outlet. A doll that resembles the bride reportedly wears the hologram’s ring.

The groom requested a marriage registration form from Gatebox, a technology company that last year offered
the documents for those who wanted to marry computer-generated personas, Reuters said.
However, the weddings reportedly do not have any legal grounds.

Since the ceremony, Kondo told Reuters that people have reached out to him, “saying they were encouraged,”
he told the outlet. “I think it was nice to have this wedding for that reason.”...'

SoCal Fire May Have Released Dangerous Radioactive Particles in Air
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 11-14-2018, 07:41 PM - Forum: General News and Events - Replies (5)

Lots of strange things going on with this fire, just like the earlier one they had in Northern CA.  Houses burning to the ground while the trees in the yard are not touched/burned, people seeing beams of blue light coming down from the sky where the fire originates, several fires igniting all at the same time miles apart, etc.

So, what's going on there?
I've seen reports from some saying they are driving the people out so the "elite" can buy up the land and take the gold that has been passed down and  saved by families who own the mountains where it is located. Others say it's because they are clearing the way for the High Speed Railway, and some say Agenda 21. There are even some who say they are clearing out the area so they won't have witnesses while they fight the aliens (ETs) in the area.

Could be any number of these, I suppose.

Quote:The 95,000 acre Woolsey fire which has coated Southern California with an apocalyptic orange glow may have released a toxic stew of radioactive particles and toxic chemicals into the air, after scorching the land on closed-down government weapons testing facility in Simi Hills known to be heavily contaminated from decades of experiments.

Commencing operation in 1947 for Rockwell's Rocketdyne Division, a government contractor for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) has a checkered safety record, to put it lightly. In addition to several nuclear accidents - including the worst nuclear meltdown in US history, toxic materials have accumulated on-site from years of dumping, just miles from thousands of residents.

Quote:It was the site of several nuclear accidents, including the worst nuclear meltdown in US history when, in 1959, facility operators intentionally vented nuclear material from the site’s “Sodium Reactor Experiment” to prevent it from overheating and exploding. By the time the leaks were closed, the site had released 459 times more radiation than was leaked during the better-known 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island.
The lab property, now owned by airplane manufacturer Boeing, stretches for 2,800 acres in the Simi Hills, and remains contaminated with toxic materials. Thousands of people live within two miles of the site, and roughly half a million live within 10 miles, according to an investigation by NBC 4 Los Angeles. -Quartz

California officials with the state's Department of Toxic Substances Control said that as of Friday, November 9, an area of the SSFL site which was scorched by the Woolsey fire posed no danger, stating "Our scientists and toxicologists have reviewed information about the fire’s location and do not believe the fire has caused any releases of hazardous materials that would pose a risk to people exposed to the smoke."

A group of concerned physicians begs to differ.
According to Robert Dodge - a physician and president of Physicians for Social Responsibility Los Angeles, highly toxic materials embedded in SSFL's soil and vegetation may have been spewed into the air by the Woolsey fire.

"We know what substances are on the site and how hazardous they are. We’re talking about incredibly dangerous radionuclides and toxic chemicals such a trichloroethylene, perchlorate, dioxins and heavy metals," said Dodge, adding: "These toxic materials are in SSFL’s soil and vegetation, and when it burns and becomes airborne in smoke and ash, there is real possibility of heightened exposure for area residents."

Quote:Weighing in with satellite imagery tells a similarly two-sided story. These images show that the fires did spread to the compound, but they didn’t take down structures. With near-infrared imagery, dense vegetation appears red while burn scars from the Woolsey fire contrast as dark brown.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Retire in January 2019
Posted by: Mystic Wanderer - 11-14-2018, 06:11 PM - Forum: Political News and more - Replies (3)

Bless her heart, she just can't stay awake for the hearings any longer.  Now, our great POTUS will get to appoint another candidate to the SCOTUS who will remain there for a generation.
This is coming a lot sooner than expected, which leaves some wondering if it's really her health, or was she given an ultimatum behind the scenes to retire, or else?

This could be why the DemoRats cheated so heavily in the mid-term elections. They need to take the Senate so they can shut down anything before it makes it to the Supreme Court.

Quote:U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has had a re-occurrence of malignant melanoma, she has told her law clerks. Ginsburg was treated in 1999 for colon cancer and had surgery in 2009 for pancreatic cancer.

She has told key Democratic members of the Senate about her medical condition, including ranking Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee Dianne Feinstein. This explains in part the "take no prisoners" attitude of the Democrats during the Kavanaugh nomination, carefully orchestrating weak 37 year old allegations against Kavanaugh by Women he barely remembers knowing in High School and College.
Let's hope the next appointment doesn't turn into the three-ring circus that Kavanaugh's did!  tinysurprised

Quote:Ginsburg, 85 was appointed by President Bill Clinton and took the oath of office on August 10, 1993. She is the second female justice (after Sandra Day O'Connor) of four to be confirmed to the court (along with Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who are still serving). Following O'Connor's retirement, and until Sotomayor joined the court, Ginsburg was the only female justice on the Supreme Court. During that time, Ginsburg became more forceful with her dissents, which were noted by legal observers and in popular culture. She is generally viewed as belonging to the liberal wing of the court.
Ginsburg has authored notable majority opinions, including United States v. Virginia, Olmstead v. L.C., and Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services, Inc.
On to better days!   minusculebeercheers

Yea, Gore can you read?
Quote:(Bloomberg) -- Houston reported its earliest snowfall ever, beating places like New York City and Boston as a cold snap descended over Texas.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston set a new record for the first observed snowfall, breaking one set on Nov. 23, 1979, according to a Twitter post from the National Weather Service. Near record-breaking cold has swept into the South, with temperatures in the state 25 degrees Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) or more below average, according to the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

“You can’t find any temperatures in Texas this morning that you could say are warm,” said Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster at the prediction center. “A pretty cold air mass sunk south over the weekend. We have gone right into a winter weather pattern across the central U.S.”
