I'm sorry to hear this, especially when it's someone who served his country so long.
His battle has been fought. May he rest in peace.

DuckforcoveRJust another casualty of a proxy war fought in the desert. No sympathy here...and not because he's Russian, but because Syria isn't anybody's business but Syria's.
Blame the US all you want, when the lines were drawn after both world wars that was just a continuation of a f'd up Middle East policy going back centuries. If you want to blame the US, fine. But start further down (Alexander the Great maybe?) so you can get to the root of the issue. Blaming the US is intellectually lazy at best.
BULLSHIT ...... the fucking u.s armed.... trained ..... finances the damn goatshaggers ..... all because assad wont kiss their fucking asses they want him gone ..... u.s even admits to supporting the fucking goatshaggers ..... so yes the fucking problem is one the fucking u.s created and continues to fucking support ..... go play your fucking c.y.a bullshit on those stupid enough to fucking believe it ......

Russia and Iran have been invited into Syria to help keep the country from falling to the cartel of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the USA sponsored terrorist (others are supporting the terrorist too) who want regime change.
I have never read where Assad invited the USA et al into their country...
Syria would have fallen if not for Russia and their support.... Sorry John McCain and all those (CIA) who thinks it is their duty to kill people in foreign lands for a more receptive puppet to be installed, yet even more sorry for the General and his family..

I've got to agree with Daitengu and Sky on this one - the only "proxies" there are the proxies armed, financed, and trained by the US. While DuckforcoveR is correct in his statement that "Syria isn't anybody's business but Syria's", there wouldn't BE a problem if the US hadn't started supporting the Muslim Brotherhood to revolt and start a civil war in Syria.
Yeah, that's right - research it if you don't believe me - it was the Muslim Brotherhood that got the ball rolling with US support. You see, the Muslim Brotherhood was causing too much trouble in Syria by insisting that Syria be entirely Sunni (and Wahabbist - that's the MB gig), against the Assads who insisted on religious freedom in Syria. Because the Muslim Brotherhood was agitating for execution of non-Sunnis, they were outlawed in Syria by the Assads. The US, seeking to stir trouble and "nation build" in Syria to get a government more amenable and pliable in their hands, took a firm stance AGAINST religious freedom (apparently their support of US Constitutional values is.. situational...) by supporting rebellious factions.
Not to mention that the US pretty much created ISIS under Obama - left a power vacuum for ISIS to exploit and lots and lots of US weapons for them to use behind.
Assad did the only thing he could do under the circumstances - invited Russia and Iran to his civil war to counter the US support for the rebel factions.
SO, to recap - the US supported it's alleged "enemies" in contravention of it's own Constitutional values in order to "nation build" in a foreign land where they had no business interfering - all AGAINST the wishes of the local government, and the local government invited the other players in to counter the evil US influences.
There is a BIG damned difference there. That difference is Syrian control of Syrian soil, and Syrian decisions on who to invite to THEIR party. I put enough time into crashing other folks' parties when I was younger to have a firm understanding of that difference.

Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.
Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’
