Would You? Honestly, they are saying it's Safer, that most accidents are caused by Pilot Error.

Commercial airplanes already possess many automated functions, but pilots will tell you they can’t do everything a trained human can do. The airline industry, however, thinks it can save $35 billion dollars a year by going to a completely automated, pilot-free plane.

The advantage to going pilot-free to airlines and consumers is lower cost. Due to a pilot shortage, airlines are offering $20,000 sign up bonuses and large salaries to entice qualified persons to the profession. Another is safety; aeronautics giant Boeing says 80 percent of airline accidents are due to human error.

Mike felt package delivery service on automated planes might be a safer start. It seems most air travelers agree, with only 17 percent saying they feel comfortable with the concept. Nevertheless, we could see fully automated commercial planes by 2030.

Until something went wrong.... then who decides where best to ditch? or whether to turn back etc. ?

With all the things being uncovered lately about how planes can be taken over and controlled from the ground to make them crash (if someone important is aboard that needs to be silenced), and all the hi-jacking, no wonder no one wants to be a pilot these days.

Computers?  NO.  I agree with Gordi. A human needs to be there to take over in certain situations.

But, I don't fly, so... whatever.

A computer cannot value life as it is has no self-awareness. It will make decisions that could be construed
as 'judgements', but it's not influenced by facts and variables, it just follows a generalised script created
by humans.

And human-error is real.

It'll be interesting to hear 727Sky's view on this.
