Depends on how the shock wave propagated and the direction[s], velocity, and mass of any shrapnel caused by the explosion.

I would guess that if he was trying to prepare a bomb en route, he would have been doing so at the far end of the back seat from the driver to attempt to keep it hidden from view, so the brunt of the blast probably went into the bomb maker, the passenger side rear door, and the back of the passenger side front seat, somewhat shielding the driver. Probably didn't do much good for his ear drums, though!
