I watched a documentary a few years ago that said the Knight's Templar were looking for the Ark of the Covenant. 
It contained the highest power of all the lands. 
I don't remember much else about the documentary. Don't know if they ever found it, if they're protecting it, or what became of it. But, this could answer your question, "what were they looking for?"
