I think if there's any conspiracy theory regarding China releasing the Covid-19 virus deliberately to
punish the US for the trade wrangles, could this effect have been the goal?

Yes, that would doubtless be a part of the strategy to crash the economy - but only a part. Another factor in the strategy would be the volatility and death throes of the panicky folks who make the stock market tick.

It looks to me like the EU may have been targeted as well, with Italy and Iran as the access points into it.

I heard in the wind that the UK is paying off-duty workers 80% of their regular wage while they're out, but do not know how true that is. The same source said Denmark was paying 75% to out of work workers, and that Canada is giving each family 2k Canadian dollars a month for the duration, so they may have been targeted as well, or they may be collateral damage. THE US appears to me to not even be able to get up off of a one-time payment of 1200.00 per displaced worker, because the Democrats insist on poisoning the bill by packing it with unrelated pork projects that they have had in the wings forever, but have been otherwise unable to push through. NO ONE writes up an 1100 page or 1400 page bill overnight - that shit was sitting in someone's desk drawer just waiting for the right crisis to get trotted out.

The panic-demic appears to me to not be getting any better. I can't say for sure, because I've not graphed it out, but I did crunch some numbers a little while ago. New York gained around 7000 new infections over the last 24 hours, but their death rate is down to 1% thanks to the massive aid pouring into NY. Meanwhile, in Virginia, the death rate has risen to 2.8% due to a combination of factors, one of which is undoubtedly aid being re-routed to NY, but another of which is the fact that a nursing home in Lee County has been infected. I do not know the infection rate in NY because I don't have the total numbers tested to divide the positive cases into, but in VA it is 7.4% of all people tested. Bear in mind that that figure likely doesn't translate into the general population, since there is no reason and no resources to test people who are not already sick with something, so it's only about 7.4% of the people with upper respiratory infections who are testing positive. That doesn't factor in the still healthy population.

Overnight, several states have entered the "over 2000 cases" club - Michigan and Louisiana just off the top of my head are now in it.

I'm not really a panicky person, but I do believe that the estimates of everyone being put back to work in a couple of weeks are overly-optimistic given those figures. It doesn't appear to be slowing down as much as is being billed, and it looks to me like the pronouncements of a quick return to work are being promulgated simply to delay deeper panic, keep folks thinking that the sunlight is just around the curve.

I think there is a good chance things are going to get a lot worse before they get any better.
