Dead Man's DC Home had Mystery Tunnels.

If not a prepper, then maybe he was involved in some type of future terrorist plan, and the tunnels were being dug as a route to the target.  AND, maybe someone found out, and wanted him dead, thus the fire.

Who knows?  I'm sure we never will.
