I agree with Ms. G. that your wife's grandmother was checking in on her family member, as I'm sure she continues to do, even when she is not seen.
Why was she seen this time, you may wonder? It is my opinion that the conditions of your wife's mind was still somewhat in the Alpha state, which allows one to see/communicate with the spirit world much easier. Her grandmother just wanted to make her aware that she was with her, looking over her, so she took the opportunity to do so.
As for the basket, everything is energy and can reach a "frequency" that makes it solid enough to be able to touch this world. Just as the woman was able to materialize enough to be seen, the basket became solid enough to rest on the banister, influenced by the woman's frequency holding it.
Our family and friends don't wish to scare us when they appear, but still, unless people are aware and unafraid of such visits from beyond, it's enough to cause people to freak out at the sight of them. I think this is why they don't show themselves to us more often.
I have never seen any of my family members on this world after they passed, but I have felt their presence on many occasions, and I often visit with them on the astral plane while my body sleeps. It's really cool to know they never truly leave us.
However... it's those who aren't family, or have good intentions toward us that we need to be concerned about!!
