My Grandma laughed and told me about that when I was a kid ... as she handed me my first $10 gold piece. I remember it had an Indian Head on it. I was never into collecting coins, but my Grandma always gave one to her grandkids when they visited. I remember my Grampa scoffing and saying the metal was on 83 or 85% gold.
Then, I took a job and that's how we were paid. One gold piece per day. $330/mo face value. Made me laugh at the IRS. Only time in my life I ever 'got over' on the gooberment. Still gives me good vibes when I think about it.
