Probably just a kangaroo and the man thought it would make a good hoax story.
The only thing that gives me pause is it's feet. see how much bigger the one on the left of the image is than the one on the right? If that "big foot" is actually a tail dragging the ground, it's not a kangaroo - kangaroos don't have bushy tails like squirrels.
