So, it is shaping up to be another cold winter in Europe, and apparently, EU countries don't have enough natural gas in reserve to meet what will be the demands for heating places of work and residence.
Surprise, the Russians are in no hurry to help. Merkel, the old communist from the DDR, believed she could rely on the Russians and that their gas supply would not be used as a tool to pressure the EU. That Germany practically worshipped her as a chancellor for SIXTEEN years is ample evidence that the German public are still children in the sense of understanding politics.
Germany has pursued green policies to shut down their own coal production (while ramping up coal imports ...) and THEN pressured other countries to shut down their coal production as well. Unfortunately, renewables won't heat Europe north of the Alps during winter. Gas or coal are pretty much the two options. The EU has acted as a cat's paw for German policies and harassed other EU countries to meet the "green" goals.
Add on two years of failed COVID restrictions (now the German state of Hesse has passed a law allowing grocery stores to decide if they allow unvaccinated customers to shop), economies bogging down, and steep inflation all over Europe.
The EU has remained so tone deaf post-Brexit as to beggar belief. The Eurocrats, the so-called 'experts', and spineless, corrupt politicians have brought the EU to the brink of utter failure. What surprises me is that the USA and the EU are practically mirrors of each other at the moment.
