Was South Africa a better and safer place for the people when they had apartheid than it is now ??.
Please remember there is no racism in this question, just a question

I'd have to give that a qualified "yes". I'm not sure South Africa has ever truly been a safe place for the people, but under apartheid there was at least a semblance of social structure that didn't reek of Socialist Paradise. With that said, it also got decidedly UNsafe under apartheid as well when the Mandelas and the ANC decided that things needed exploding. Keep in mind that this is just one man's subjective opinion - I'm sure you could find others diametrically opposed to it.

I think that part of SA's problem was far too many outsiders wanting to meddle in their internal affairs, and those outsiders came from all sides, so SA didn't have a hope in hell of surviving with their version of "intact". I never cared much about apartheid one way or another. In my opinion, South African internal affairs were for South Africans to decide, not us outsiders. back in those days Pretty much all of Africa was in turmoil. Rhodesia collapsed, got renamed "Zimbabwe", and promptly started running downhill economically due to a variety of factors, socialism among them, but "social justice" issues ran a close second to it. Congo was all to hell. Cubans were teaching Angola how to ruin a country. Namibian communists decided to go to war with South Africa, and the next thing you knew, South Africa was under siege internally and externally. The ANC could never have taken her down, however, had not the rest of the world destabilized her.

I think the issue of apartheid was just a smoke screen to cover a socialist overthrow. Yes, it was real, but it was a convenient distraction for other forces at work, to keep attention off of them. Then again, I tend not to see things in terms of racism, but rather in terms of culture and control politics instead. Cultural and political problems are rarely, if ever, limited to race, no matter how badly the world wants to hide them behind it.

Not long after my first wife and I separated, she went to South Africa to work in an orphanage. Before she left, she came to get my advice on traveling overseas safely, and all I could really tell her was "avoid South Africa". As a red-headed white woman, I am still amazed that she survived it relatively unscathed. Maybe something of me did rub off on her, and maybe she was just incredibly lucky - or maybe God really was looking out for her!
