I agree with NightSkye, you can't eat precious metals and the black market will determine the price. Barter will be the best route IMO.
I also agree with BIAD, that it is like the Vatican is stuffing the mattress, like a run on the banks before they go under. They realize that when your wealth is stored in banks and investments that it is under the control of others who can keep from you or lose it altogether.
Another consideration is the library at the Vatican. Knowledge is far more valuable than their commodities. The activities there should be monitored closely, they likely have foreknowledge of something on the horizon.
