If you take 800mg of ibuprophen and 1000 mg of Tylenol, it packs about the same pain relieving punch as a Vicodin, just without the "high".

It's hard on the stomach, liver and kidneys.
I've been on it for a while and got a blood test done to determine if I needed to quickly schedule my shoulder replacement or put it off based on how affected my liver and kidney function is.
Good news is that even after a year, I'm still pretty darned good.
I told my doc that my liver and kidneys would be fine because I wash them in alcohol constantly.
