Heh heh. No comment on the tragic circumstances you investigated, but I wanted to mention the following.
In the winter of 1939-1940, a French general consulted a well known "mystic" who used such a method. His question was where the Germans would launch their main attack.
Her "divining weight" pointed to the Ardennes in the area of Sedan.
