Large scale conflict is waged by groups, and groups have a psychological dynamic all their own. When we fight wars, it is not as one person against another. It is as groups, and those making up the groups behave in accordance with group expectations. And group expectations are pretty much lowest-common-denominator.
There are great people the world over, but as individuals, they don't drive the interaction of societies.
