The whole bit about "official" is the media trying to make themselves Kingmakers.  Not their role.  They're not elected to public office, they have no formal authority, and, critically, they are not responsible for any policy initiated as a result of their disingenuous gaslighting.

This is an extension of them self-defining as the "Fourth Estate" back around the time of Watergate.
