No doubt the Poles in the Katyn Forest were all telling themselves it was going to be just fine. 
Some may know of the war crime I write of here.
What you may not know is the Soviets encouraged them, while prisoners, to write home so that the Soviets could learn where families of the Polish officers lived. Those families were rounded up and deported to Siberia. Of course, it took years for them to learn of the fates of their husbands / fathers.
