'A U.S. Border Patrol agent was tracking a group of undocumented immigrants when he was
ambushed in a rock attack, a spokesman for the agency's national union said.
Agent Rogelio Martinez, 36, of El Paso, died Sunday after he and his Big Bend sector partner
responded to activity near Interstate 10 in the Van Horn area, which is about 120 miles east of
El Paso.
"We do believe it was an ambush. It was not random activity," said Chris Cabrera, spokesman
for the National Border Patrol Council union. The FBI, which is the lead agency investigating the
incident, has not confirmed if the injuries were the result of an attack.
Martinez's partner is in stable condition in the intensive care unit of an El Paso hospital.
"What we were told was that Agent Martinez had signs of a group," Cabrera said. "He had foot signs.
He didn’t say how many. When his partner got to him, he had already been attacked."
It is not known how large of a group Martinez was tracking near a culvert, Cabrera said.

help, the Border Patrol "cast a wide net," including a helicopter, to try to find the group, Cabrera said.
"We don’t know if it was one assailant or multiple assailants," Cabrera said.
Cabrera said that Martinez's partner was seriously injured and does not remember much about the
incident. "He is expected to survive. He has a long recovery ahead of him," Cabrera said.
Few details have been released by authorities who said the incident is still under investigation.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced that a $20,000 reward is being offered by Texas Crime Stoppers for
information leading to the arrest of anyone involved.
Rush Carter, a supervisor for the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol region that includes the area where
Martinez died, told the Associated Press that all the agency can confirm is that the two "were injured
while performing their regular duties" and that reports the agents were attacked are "speculation."
The Associated Press, citing an anonymous source, also reported that investigators believe Martinez
may have fallen down a 14-foot culvert.
The FBI in a news release Monday night said Border Patrol agents found the two agents “in a culvert area”
adjacent to I-10 about 12 miles east of Van Horn late Saturday night.
They provided immediate medical care and took them to a Van Horn hospital.
