dvd drive access
#1
Wondering if anyone has an idea of what may be causing something on my computer.

What seems like randomly, the computer accesses the DVD drive as if it is checking to see if a disc is there, or it wants to load something from a disk.  Seems to happen while I browse the internet, not when I run an application.

Computer is running 64 bit Win 10.

I've thought maybe malware, but not sure what accessing the DVD drive would do for a digital bad boy.

Cheers

I would say it's because it's Windows 10, which is known to scan all your drives for "illegal" (i.e Windows don't like that software package, and so uninstalls it) software, but my Windows 7 has recently been giving me the message "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive \Device\Harddisk1\DR1", so I dunno. Mine only does it when one particular graphic program is running, and that program is free and so cannot be "illegal", so I dunno.

Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’

Thanks for the comments.  @"Ninurta" may be onto something with the "checking drives" comment.

Do make sure your DVD drive is clean, then check what sort of AV and web page protection you have. If you dont have a good AV you can get 3 months for free BITDEFENDER link. BD is a bit heavy but works well, IOBIT is good.
Updating drives is something you should do ( woods runner ) gives good advice.

Not related to the drive problem, but I downloaded ClamAV and am running it.

Already found two manufacturer software issues -- something called shadowhammer.

This was apparently an attack that targeted around 600 PC's worldwide.  (Only ASUS models).  I'm nobody important, so my PC wasn't targeted. Still, pisses me off that Windows never uttered a peep when I scanned with Windows Defender.

So much malware and other BS out there.

Cheers

I don't regularly run any antivirus software any more. I used to run two AV programs and a software firewall, but in the last few years since Win10 has come out, software engineers have ben rushing to "simplify" their programs and make the interface conform to the new Win10 interface, with the net result that you no longer have the amount of control over your own AV and firewall that you used to have, so I stopped running them. Who needs software they can't control?

Now I just run a scan occasionally if I think there may be a problem.

It leaves me somewhat vulnerable, but if a hacker wants to get in, and then do the number crunching to decrypt all my cat videos, more power to 'em!
