In response to your link (the Daily Fail – lol!) , one commentor rephrased the headline more accurately: “The study was looking at autistic people. So shouldn't the headline read - autistic people are more likely to be transgender?” (rather than transgender people are more likely to autistic)

Maybe we should also be asking why there are so many more autistic people? As noted earlier, what the hell does transgender even mean other than a catch-all for an overly broad and ill-defined variety of things? Let’s face it, trans people are effing just crazy, if that makes it easier to grasp?

This is an emerging field that needs more research but there does seem to be a connection.

Whilst our study does not test causality, a few hypotheses may explain the over-representation of autism and other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions in transgender and gender-diverse individuals. First, autistic individuals may conform less to societal norms compared to non-autistic individuals, which may partly explain why a greater number of autistic individuals identify outside the stereotypical gender binary. Second, prenatal mechanisms (e.g., sex steroid hormones) shaping brain development have been shown to contribute to both autism (and associated neurodevelopmental conditions) and gender role behavior It is unclear if prenatal sex steroid hormones also contribute to gender identity and this should be investigated in future studies.

The elevated rates of autism and other conditions must be considered against other hypotheses that may explain the observed results due to the non-probabilistic nature of the sample. Specifically, for autism, one alternative hypothesis is that transgender and gender-diverse individuals may be more likely to report higher rates of autistic traits due to long-standing experiences and feelings of “not fitting in socially”

We support the debate on the GD-ASD literature and acknowledge that translations of the findings to the lay press such as "Do transgender children just have autism?" are not helpful. Also, we agree with many of the limitations brought forward by the authors and acknowledge that, at present, sound underlying evidence for a GD-ASD link is lacking.

In total, 25 articles and reports were selected and discussed. Information was grouped by found co-occurrence rates, underlying hypotheses and implications for diagnosis and treatment. GD and ASD were found to co-occur frequently - sometimes characterized by atypical presentation of GD, which makes a correct diagnosis and determination of treatment options for GD difficult. Despite these challenges there are several case reports describing gender affirming treatment of co-occurring GD in adolescents and adults with ASD. Various underlying hypotheses for the link between GD and ASD were suggested, but almost all of them lack evidence.
