As a good friend said to me: 

Contrast this scenario with that of the returning Vietnam soldier, just as brave, just as dedicated, and just as deceased. They were typically directed to a hangar where a truck would load the casket and take it to its destination with little if any fanfare except an occasional honor guard at the larger airports. It is only in the last few years that those who were sent to die for another country’s freedom are getting the honor and respect they deserve. Our good citizens seemed to forget that they went because they were ordered to, and not because they volunteered in most instances.
