It's hard to say if these teens knew who he was; could have, maybe. Did they target him for some particular reason? Had he refused to join their gang previously and this was retribution? Were they jealous that he was becoming successful?
I do know that gangs make new members do some horrible things to be initiated in to prove how far they're willing to go for "the family".
Gangs are evil, but to a teen who has no family structure at home, a gang gives him/her a feeling of belonging, and most youth will do unspeakable things to keep that family in their life.
Sad.
