That's why I'm not sure whether the idea of a maze had been imported further back before standing stone circles or not.
It's said that the Greeks and Cretans had their labyrinths back in 430 BC and history tells us this was the origin of a maze
design, but the first English stone circles were erected 2500–3000 BC.

This doesn't explain the 'spiral'-like pattern, but it's a little confusing.
