I got to sixteen years-old before I discovered that tidal movements weren't made in the
way I thought. Up until then, I assumed the oceans behaved like bath water slowly sloshing
from one side to the other!
Nobody had mentioned it during my school years and in those days, I wasn't one for reading
science books.
The moon 'pulls' at the Earth with it's orbiting gravity and this draws the waters and slightly alters
the shape of our 'spherical' planet. I know that may have been obvious to others, but nobody told
me until two friends looked curiously at me when I said I believed in my bath-water theory!!
And that's what the Flat-Earth theory is all about. Ignorance.
But that word is seen in today's society as hurtful and attacking, this world of feelings as stopped
the discourse where we can learn with the confidence that just because we don't know about a
subject, doesn't mean we can't learn the facts.
Instead, we're bogged down with petulance of people who refuse to change their minds.
I'd suggest one of the ways around this obstacle is for teachers to explain that science is also
ignorant.
It is ignorant of your opinions unless there's facts to back them up, science is ignorant of your
beliefs and how you want to see the world. Science is wrong at times and is learning as we go
through time, it finds it's way just as a child does. It becomes correct.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't care. It just sits there and is what it is!
