What does this even mean?? "reportedly denied" - is that like half a denial?

Either they denied it or they did not, what does the first word add to the meaning?  That they reported the denial? To whom? If it is "reportedly", why are you reporting it, are you not sure of the denial?

I love how ridiculous use of language like this is just accepted at face value by many.
