Hepatitis outbreak in children in US and Europe may be linked to adenovirus

I put this out on the other side and got a rather poor response. So I thought I'd recompose it here and see what responses I get.

Is COVID and Monkey Pox not enough, how about hepatitis from a common adenovirus? It seems that there is work on using this particular adenovirus in vaccines. Is there a connection?

Mysterious cases of serious liver damage or hepatitis in kids have been reported in a dozen countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Japan, and Canada.

Health officials say there have been nearly 200 cases, 17 liver transplants, and one death.

Health officials report that the outbreak may be linked to adenovirus, a common cold virus.

Any child showing signs of jaundice, a symptom of hepatitis, should be evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible.

In response to an alert due to epidemic gastroenteritis in children in a kindergarten, an outbreak investigation was carried out in a Portuguese municipality. The objectives were to establish an aetiological diagnosis, assess vaccine efficacy if possible, and to take corrective measures if necessary. The warden at the kindergarten was interviewed, and we visited the premises. The overall attack rate was 11·4% and most cases were mild. Stool samples from three symptomatic children were collected and screened for the presence of noroviruses, rotaviruses and adenoviruses.

They have been using adenovirus for vaccines for a long time now. This one (adenovirus 41) has been studied more recently for vaccine uses.

Adenovirus (rAd) vectors have long been studied as candidates for gene-based vaccines and therapies. There are many attractive characteristics of adenovirus including growth to high titer, manufacturability, and adequate space in the genome for gene insertions. Moreover, these viruses have been used safely as vaccines for Acute Respiratory Syndrome (ARS) and adenovirus vectors are being tested for efficacy in vaccine clinical trials.

The thing is, when these labs use a virus for a vaccine study, they will do gain of function to make it more easily infect human tissues, like maybe liver tissue?

What makes this adenovirus "novel" when it is supposed to be naturally occurring and so common?

Hmm? Any ideas why it's a novel adenovirus?

That's what they call any virus they manipulated in a lab and changed it into some new, you know, novel virus. Also it is being used to make a vaccine to treat HIV, so maybe they gave this adenovirus a gain of function that involved splicing some HIV bits into it, that would be pretty novel, well except for SARS-CoV-2 that has some HIV bits in it as well and was a novel virus too.

Do I get to wear a mask again?!?!? I got some snazzy new designs. 

I wonder what the rate of disease today versus 20, 50, 100, 500 years ago? I know this is impossible to nail down because data does not exist. Even today it's only estimates and depends on definitions, who is reporting, where it is reported, etc.

My tin foil hat tells me there is not much of a difference over time. However, we know the threat of a new disease really scares people. If I were in the business of keeping the populace on their back foot, diseases are something I would fear monger.

I work in the medical field. There are definitely times to wear a mask. 

I have no problem with a mask for medical reasons.

I will not return to the indiscriminate use of a mask, nor will I return to the use of a cloth mask.

Youi are right. I agree there are times for a mask. Wearing one 24/7 in my daily life is not one of those times.
