Do Gender Studies programs create activists?
#1
I came across this discussion concerning a proposed bill in Wyoming that would remove public funding for Gender Studies programs.  One point made about public funding is that the programs, essentially, train activists, which goes against public interests.   The bill was shot down.

I agree, and would go one step further.  Training for essential jobs, for public interest should be the only post high school education supported by public funding.

Sure it does sometimes.

Especially when the "students" are already half brainwashed and emboldened under false pretenses and propaganda.

Right!   So why do we fund these programs?  If a Gender Studies degree trains you to agitate, agitate is going to be what you do.  So public funds are being used to cause public conflict and disruption.

I was raw material when I was in University, over 50 years ago. First time away from home. A silly country girl that thought she knew more about life than she did. I knew nothing about anything, but it took me a few years to finally realize that.

University does something to young minds. This is not a new phenomenon by a long shot. The difference between today and yesterday, is that our parents and elders, slapped us back into reality, and we didn't have a metaverse to hide in that kept the lie alive.

I will never forget the brutal slap in the face I got from my mother when I was home visiting, showing off and telling my Mom about all the mistakes her generation had made, and how detrimental to society they all were. My Mom very calmly said, "Well my darling, I think you had better find yourself a job, because I m not paying my hard earned money to a school that teaches you such dribble." And she was serious as a heart attack.

At that moment, I remember it like it was yesterday, I stopped and thought about what I was saying, and realized I was a stupid girl, letting her ego, write a check that her ass would have to cash. I woke up instantly, and was able to see through all the BS, and left it where it belonged. On campus.

I wonder how many jobs there are in Wyoming for gender study graduates? Outside of the university itself.

While offering a broad spectrum of education is fine, what do gender study grads actually do for the community besides agitprop? I'm sure Wyoming is not alone on this issue.

I wonder if a university offered a similar program in non-woke or anti-woke public activism, how well that would go over?

Same conversation happened at my house, but it was my Dad, who had already gone the step of only paying for required STEM degree courses, and their suggested electives.   Some leeway, but he had final approval based on syllabus, or the wallet stayed shut.  This was 1970s

By the time my daughter was looking post high school, in the 2000s, she wanted me to cosign a loan for 100k to go to a private photography and arts school.  I laughed my butt off.   She was offended.  High school counselor had her all pumped up, certain she could get it paid for, since I was a single mom.  I told her, I make twice your salary so have at it, and let me know how much funding you can find.  I was such a mean mom!  Wouldnt write the check.

Ironically, the school did have a world class reputation for many years, but sheesh, everyone has a cell phone camera that blows old film cams out of the water!  They went tits-up before she would have even graduated.  And nobody got refunds!

When I go to a bank for a business loan, they make sure that I have a solid plan before they give me a loan.   Why not the same for student loans?

That sad thing is, if Wyoming cant put an end to this kind of stupid, where else is there a chance?

Because they don't expect to get the money from the student. They plan to hound the parents into the grave. My mother didn't sign for my sister's student loan and they still came after her with both feet.

It worked though, because my sister was so upset they were harassing my Mom, that she paid off her loan.

I don't even know what "gender studies" is. They didn't have any such thing when I was in school, or even later when I was in college - and that lasted off and on into my 30's. I probably need to get out more, I guess. We figured out our genders, well, not in the schoolyard.

My sister majored in "general studies" when she went to college, and we always said that was the curriculum folks entered to get their Mrs. degree. I presume "gender studies" is not to earn an Mrs. degree. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable marrying someone who had to study what gender they were. In my day, we learned that elsewhere, and school was there to teach us how to read, write, figure sums. get around or go through authority figures, and such stuff as that. Our "gender studies" may have been home economics for the gals, and shop class for the fellas, although that wasn't a hard and fast rule - some guys took home economics so they could learn to cook (a handy thing for a bachelor to know - them bpys planned ahead!), and I met one of my high school sweethearts in shop class, so there were gals in there, too. That gal could weld a bead better than i could, by the way.

So, not knowing just what gender studies is, I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I mean, it's good for folks to know what gender they are, but kinda rough if they have to take a class in school to find out. Wouldn't that sort of take time away from important studies - you know, the ones that will help them get jobs and be productive? Couldn't they just ask a significant other what their gender is if they are uncertain? I ,mean, such folks would have access to examine the defining characteristics up close and personal so there wouldn't be any mistakes made, wouldn't they?

Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’

Isn't that the exact program Praeger University offers? Take a look at how well that goes over, and you will find the answer to that question.

True, just as engineers are trained, not really ‘created’, such are the muckrakers. And they get a credential.

Universities have become ideological factories.

They were that way in the 80's when I was in college and I imagine they haven't changed much.

Gender Studies used to be called Women's Studies, in some schools.   I guess it morphed.  Just like ‘female’ and ‘feminism’ have morphed too.   Progress!

Well, yes, they come out of high school all woke and raring to go to social justice war, but the univ programs give them the skill set to agitate, create propaganda and promote social unrest successfully.   Like med school teaches those with a passion for healing, how to successfully do surgery.

Should taxpayers be footing the bill for this kind of credential at public schools?

We could put an end to the crazy by ceasing to fund training for its practitioners.

I'm in Canukistan, but same problem here. I would like to see Math, English, Science/Tech taught, not so much for woke studies. I'm not sure how we undo whats happening. I guess there is some place for social studies, but it's like being pushed to the forefront, and we as a planet have much bigger problems than gender studies, catering to 5% of the population. Ok, I guess I'm more referring to gender studies, as applied to people confused about their gender. Gender studies in general, I suppose cover everyone. I have to imagine there is some focus, towards whatever the cause of the day is.

Cool! I feel like I might be qualified to teach such a course on a collegiate level - I've been studying wimmins all my life!

Still haven't really figured them out, but I think all that study should count for something!

They didn't have such a thing when I was in high school, although they may have had it by the time I got to university. I can't say, because no one ever talked to me about such potentials back then. I doubt many people noticed if they had such a thing. Most folks were far more interested in studying the opposite sex, and beer. everyone wanted to really study beer hard. I was "the old guy" by then, as I was a good 10 or 12 years older than most of those kids, so they all wanted me to help them study, mostly because I was old enough to buy beer, and could put deposits on kegs.

I did do a turn as a nude model for the art classes for a while, and no one came around to tell me about how I was being oppressed by The Man or anything for taking off my clothes in front of a bunch of girls and standing still like a statue for an hour or so at a time... but then again, colleges have never really been interested in Men's Liberation, so I guess that's understandable. That job was my first wife's fault, by the way - she talked me into that. She also tried to talk me into being a male stripper at a women's club, but I had to draw the line somewhere - you ever been in one of those places? Them women in  'em are crazy, and got no shame at all!

There's a reason she's my ex..

But you are correct that gender studies should not be paid for by the public dime. No more than keg parties should be paid for by public funds. Neither is a real, actual, useful thing to provide tangible benefit to the public paying for it by enhancing productivity. Kinda like in the same way you can't buy liquor with food stamps, because the public is under no obligation to support your personal hobbies.
