Rumor has it the Russian convoy is out of fuel !

What Ukrainians wouldn't give for a few A-10s or some really good Napalm !
Quote:Report: Massive Russian convoy running out of gas, food en route to Kyiv

WASHINGTON — The U.S. on Tuesday injected a strong note of caution into the persistent reports that Russian military progress — including by the massive convoy outside Kyiv — has slowed, plagued by food and fuel shortages and logistical problems.
One senior Defense official said that the U.S. has seen Russian military columns literally run out of gas, and in some places running out of food, and that morale is suffering as a result.
But the official added that it is important to be pragmatic. The Russians still have a significant amount of combat power that has not yet been tapped, and “they will regroup, they will adjust, they will change their tactics.”

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military assessments. Overall, the U.S. assesses that Russia has launched more than 400 missiles into Ukraine, of various types and sizes. As of Tuesday, the Ukrainian air and missile defense systems remain viable and are being used. Also, weapons from the U.S. and others continue to flow into Ukraine. The official said that the aid is getting to the Ukrainian military and troops are “actively using these systems.”
The official said Russians have made progress in the south, moving along two routes out of Crimea – one to the northeast and one to the northwest. It’s not clear that Russians have taken control of Kherson, but heavy fighting continues. And, the official said Russian forces have not yet advanced into Mariupol, but are close enough to strike into the city with long-range weapons.

One thing I've heard is that there is higher ground flanking the highway and the Ukrainians have troops there.

Also heard some of those vehicles didn't come down from Belarus, but over from the Kharkov way.  Lot of gas burned, if true.

They may have tanker trucks with the column.  But if those come under fire, things will really get dicey.

Those guys may be SOL, in terms of mobility.

I wouldn't recommend an A-10 type attack at this point.  The morale of ordinary Russian troops doesn't seem sky high.  But if someone manages to kill thousands of them in a mousetrap, that would probably stiffen their resolve a lot.  I think we are still at a point where this invasion can be de-fuzed as long things don't get a lot more bloody.

Cheers

I tend towards belief of at least some of these reports, because they offer an explanation for why the invasion has bogged down. There has to be an explanation for why the much vaunted Russian Military Machine is behaving as if someone threw sand in the gear grease, and these reports fill that bill.

It has been said that an army travels on it's stomach, and rations that expired 7 years ago - when you can get any rations at all - are not conducive to a sumptuous feast. That, in combination with not being told they were going to invade a neighbor that has not attacked them, and where at least some of the Russian troops are likely to have relatives, and then finding that far from being welcomed with open arms as "liberators" and instead being attacked at every turn, does not make for a morale booster.

.
Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king.

Said Aristippus, ‘If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.’ Said Diogenes, ‘Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.’

Could just be an operational pause. Who knows. Maybe just the presence of such a large and looming combat force has the intent of leverage at the talks.

I remember Iraq in 2003. Big dust storms and the need for logistics to catch up, so everything halted. The media made a big deal of it like the war was lost already. Like driving to Baghdad should take no more than 20 minutes or something so what's the hold up? Just a bunch of guys shooting at you and blowing the place up. Nothing to worry about.

Russia is one of the largest oil producers and refiners in the world. In the top three. I find it hard to believe they are out of gas. ***NOW***, having the fuel and having it where you want it are two different things. That is totally possible. But will they remain fuel-less for long? I don't think so.

Of course the distance from Kiev to the Belarus border is under 150 miles. You would think this should have been planned for already but that's how combat goes. It's a chaotic mess. But it sure does seem to be a large target sitting there.

I don't think the Russians prepared logistically for a campaign of more than a few days in length.

Plus, every time they move, there's a bunch of Ukrainian Daniel Boones who take any advantage that is presented.

Even the farmers are towing abandoned armored vehicles away.  tinylaughing
