So you want to fly a helicopter in a war zone ?

In not to many more years when an army/Air Force face an equally well equipped 1st class military, doctrine will have to change as causalities will be horrendous IMO

Judging by the smoke trail of the missile, that looked more like a lateral hit than a frontal one.

Mi-24's is why we started smuggling Stingers into Afghanistan back in the day. The Hinds were flying NOE, and were a holy terror. You'd just be sitting there on a reverse slope, minding your own business - which usually involved either killing Russians or doing recon preparatory to killing Russians - and one would just pop up over the ridge and start lighting stuff up. If you saw one, you always knew that at least 3 more were hiding behind other ridges, getting ready to light stuff up, because they always flew in flights of at least 4.

So we smuggled those Stingers in through the area around the Khyber Pass.

Proof of concept was at Jalalabad. There was a Hind base there, and one fine day a flight of 6 took off from it, heading south into the mountains that surrounded the infamous Tora Bora, Unbeknownst to them, there was a team set up just waiting for that to happen, armed with smuggled Stingers. 5 Hinds were dropped in their own rotor wash that day, leaving one to get back to base to report the action.

After that proof of concept, Stingers were lighting up Hinds everywhere, and that forced them to abandon NOE flight and head to higher air, which made them less effective for fire support. You see, the Mi-24 Hind has also been called a "flying tank", loaded down with rockets and carrying a 12.5mm gun mounted under the nose. Forcing them to increase altitude made their weapons less accurate, and save muj lives so that they could live to fight another day.

So it's good to see Ukrainians carrying on that tradition!

Wow... they had that ambush set up complete with videographer in the perfect spot.

I am guessing the Russian military is now re-writing their own doctrine. On the fly.   ...ahem...

Bad tactics with 4 birds shot down.

@"727Sky"

A lot of amateur stuff being done by the Russians.  Mechanized columns with no advance or flank guards -- easy to ambush.  Have they forgotten what reconnaissance is?

Also heard their encrypted cell phone service stopped working when they entered Ukraine, so now they're all yapping in the clear.  WTF -- no encrypted tactical radio networks?  I know cell phones are convenient, but they are not a replacement for organic comms capability.

Latest embarrassment is a captured air force lieutenant colonel who stated on TV, "Russia has already lost this war".

I gain the impression that corruption has bitten deeply in the Russian forces.

Cheers

If it's from a video game, it's a damned accurate one!

I've been on the receiving end of Russian Hiind attacks, and can confirm that the 12.5 mm nose mounted machine guns and rocket barrages from the wing mounted rocket pods are exactly as shown, both sound and fury. It's hard to mistake those thumb-sized hornets flying past your ears.

It's a standard Russian 4 chopper attack flight, as seen in Afghanistan. I couldn't confirm the choppers - one looked like a Hind, but another looked like it might be a Havoc, and yet a third looked too wide in the body for either of those, almost like an Mi-8 Hip with wings.

I watched it several times, but could only confirm 3 birds splashed, not 4.

So if it's a simulation, which it could be, it's a damned good one. My hat's off to the programmers.

I thought the video 727Sky posted was real too, but then read it`s from game

I'm watching the video, and am currently about half way though it, and am not convinced so far. Sky's video does not include ground based chain guns as the gamer video does. Sky's video shows 12.5 mm HMG tracer fire at the helicopters rather than a chain gun.The sky in the gamer video is "banded", as one would see in a GIF, but Sky's is not, The explosion blooms are not at all the same, nor are the flare ejections from the bird - the ones in the gamer video defy physics, but the ones in Sky's video do not. I'll continue watching, but so far it is not convincing.

ETA: I finished the gamer video, and found it unconvincing. the main ground based weapon in it was a chain gun, normally a helicopter based weapon except in Rambo movies. There were a few rockets sent at the helicopters, but they sounded like the BANG! of gunshots instead of the WHOOSH of rockets, in contrast to Sky's videos, which actually sounded like rockets being sent. I know that only because I've been on the giving end of the rockets being sent out, I can see where someone who hasn't might mistake it.

I do not understand why someone on the business end of a chain gun could miss the aircraft so badly, but some folks may just not be decent shots.OR - the physics in the game could be horrendously off. They might need to see to their physics engine. It's not all that difficult to walk a cone of fire from a chaingun to engulf a flying chopper, if you happen to have a chaingun handy.

Nossir, i don't believe the gamer video matches the actual video. However, I CAN see how a propagandist might try to throw the video under a bus, since the average gamer has never actually been on the sharp end, and doesn't understand that some real folks have, and so thinks he can get over on the average Joe.

I think you may have been taken in by propagansists., but it wouldn't be he first time.

It's possible that Sky's video is from a game - but it ain't the game being "propagandist pushed" if it is. They're going to have to try harder, and find a more accurate game. It's easy to be taken in if you've not been in the beaten zone, though, so I don't fault anyone that falls for it.

Right now, and still, to this day, both sides are throwing propaganda hot and heavy. The "video game" angle looks to me to be Russian propaganda, with intent to claim that Ukraine ISN'T really shooting birds down, while the guys on the ground know that they are. It's not the first time this playbook has been put into operation, nor will it be the last. Caveat emptor.

Thanks for that. I will peruse the channel, and see if i can find anything that matches ground truth. The simulation videos they are showing here as "super realistic" really ain't, if one has ever been where the real stuff flies, but maybe they've got something else.

These sorts of games are why I stopped playing games when they got into territory I knew something about. I stopped after flight simulators, because i might believe them since I know nothing of flight from the cockpit, but first person shooters - I've never found a realistic one.

Real world - we were trained to catch MIGs in a concentrated cone of fire from several assault rifles. if I had a chain gun available, there would be nothing in the air in my line of sight.

They even have the precisely same URL. I stand corrected, with egg on my face..
