A monk in 14th-century Italy wrote about the Americas. I think considering the background of Christopher Columbus that he got information about North America long before he traveled there. Columbus was origin of republic of Genoa, which is in Italy and this Italian monk allready writed about Marckalada long before Coloumbus made the sailing trips. So it`s possible people at the time of Columbus simply got knowledge about North America from people , listening or reading the latin text written then.
