The only way I can see a UBI working in literally ANY country is if that country had a major national income. There have been several UBI experiments but no countries have a guaranteed national UBI for all- the only nations that have for a short period of time were Mongolia and Iran but they no longer have it.
The only way to pay for a UBI is to tax the Hell out of those who actually stay working to pay for those who don't, so what is the incentive here? If the govt takes half of your pay in taxes many would end up making the same or even less than those who are not working so why wouldn't any sane person choose to get paid for staying home?
While this looks innocent from the outside, I have to look a little deeper, since everyone knows that nothing is really free, and better for some does not mean better for everybody.

Seems like most people who have replied here are in agreement: Socialism doesn't work, it only leads to Communism.
So, now tell me what's so bad about Capitalism?

So, Germany wants to experiment with costs like this, but can't meet the agreed 2% national investment in their armed forces as part of their NATO obligations.

Sounds like ...
A man walks into a bar with 2 black eyes ...
So I ask, "What happened?"
He says, "Well, I was in church and when we all stood to sing the hymn, the lady in front of me had her dress stuck in the crack of her ass. So I decided to reach up and pull it out for her. She turns around and punches me right the eye."
So I asked, "That explains one. How'd you get the other?"
"Well, I thought maybe she wanted it there ... so l shoved it back in."

@"hounddoghowlie", I agree with half of your point, and only half of the half of the other half of your point. (Mind twister).
I agree lobbyist can go, but Congressmen are only bad when they are corrupt, which at this point, most are. I think term limits would be a good way to correct this problem.

any representative, or senator that votes to pass any bill that contains any money for anything other than what the bill was introduced for, is the problem. every bill has pork in it, tacked on for something that has nothing to do with what the bill is for. if they had any integrity they wouldn't vote yay.
at one point or another all of the members have voted yay for one, corrupt or not.

Even as liberal as I am, I don’t see a universal basic income as something that would work, at least not in the United States. How would it be paid for? With people getting that, many would choose not to work at all and we would have critical shortages in workers.
I mean, outwardly it sounds wonderful, but I think that would make our country’s problems worse. The money will have to come from somewhere, something essential that will cripple a lot of the country.
I actually believe that once peoples basic needs are met, crime drops and people aŕe allowed to express their innate creativity. I believe most are industrious but struggle circumvents that inclination and it becomes replaced with lack and fear. So yes, I am watching with great interest. Particularly since it's Germany. I mean, the locals sweep their streets without compensation because....well, they're German. Lol
OMG, yeah, I’ve been to Germany and they have the cleanest streets and sidewalks of anywhere I’ve ever been! I was flabbergasted at how clean everything is over there. They put us to shame.

I too just dont get this idea. I'm 45 and have seen enough things in life and met enough people to know...once you give people free money, many will simply not work anymore. Many will simply squander it bc it's free, meaning, you havent really earned it and therefore you dont value it the same, and knowing there is a check coming no matter what you do. I dont think this would promote "good" behavior. There is this...silly..notion that if people were free of labor than they would all be doing creative stuff and everywhere would be unicorns jumping on green meadows. Delusional and utopistic concept one I do not need to try out to know it burns.
It can never work in the long run.

indeed man. Corny...no singing voice...but the point remains. It seems to me that folks just dont understand that...no food can get to your table if everybody just stops working. Sometimes it appears to me like some child envisioned that concept. The naivety of some folk I see on twitter...like..you know..let's just dont go to work indefinately...bc of COVID. No biggie. Just stay at home, watch TV and the Govt will simply write checks for you. Oh what a wonderful world. And they get all riled up if you tell them it's unfeasible. A solid percentage of society would like to stay this way for good. Unreal.

I don’t like encouraging laziness. So I’m one of those liberals who doesn’t want to sit around on my ass and expect to reap the benefits. Imagine that!
this was tried by the Finnish government on a larger scale a few years ago. It did not work, the problems were that people on low wages disliked the fact that people were getting free money, so a why should I work feeling was gaining speed. For it to work everyone must get it, then the country is back where it started. The other factor was that some government groups demanded that all "refugees" get it, and that would of meant that they would be getting as much as many people who worked all there lives are getting in the lower pension scale

If enough people aren't working real jobs, the amount of contributions to the national health insurance fund will go down. A few years ago, the Germans already moved to charging a minimal fee to see a doctor as part of health insurance program. That was after DECADES of not having a fee, because there were enough people employed to keep the program fee-free.
All of these measures have many side effects, some of which won't be foreseen.
Cheers

The problem is the same as I have with renters. If it doesn't belong to them they aren't invested in it, and feel no responsibility for maintaining it.
The only way this will work is that everyone receiving a check has to have some skin in the game. They have to contribute something. There is something everyone can do. Caring for those too old or too sick is one way. Keeping the environment clean and clutter free. Every home has something that needs tidying or sprucing up.
The trick is that it will have to be managed on a local scale and our society is not conditioned to be lead by Andy Griffith. Put in someone of the Stanford school and it will go south quickly.
We have spent several generations teaching our young that the whole world revolves around them, that they don't have to be responsible for their actions, and they are entitled to something for nothing, so it is going to take a lot more than hitting a reset button to make this work.
Hunger is a good motivator but it is also a good teacher, just not a generous or loving one.
