Hello all here at RN. This is a followup report regarding our dog Polar or 'Girlie' as she is affectionately know. I'm undertaking a Part II after all the responses I received with thoughts, prayers and good wishes. I think I managed to reply to all in the original thread about the accident.
Last night the Vet surgeon rang twice after we returned home from the surgery. She informed us that x rays showed significant damage to girlie's rear leg. Crushed and paw flattened. Amputation was deemed an option. (no). The vet sent the x rays of the leg to an orthopedic surgeon for review.
It was agreed we could visit today where the vet would outline the prognosis. We managed to attend about midday after work. We were shown girlie who was bandaged up of course with drip and the obligatory cone over her head. She was pretty dopey which was understandable.
Lots of gentle hugs and pats. The vet showed us a series of x rays on the screen. Internals were fine and the rip on her abdomen stitched up. The leg was a different matter. As I said the cheap option was amputation. Truey and I said "Nah." The other options were pinning, fusing the bones or the permanent wearing of a support. We said we'll look at pinning and or fusing. This has to be done by the specialist at a place called Coffs Harbor on the coast. Being Friday tomorrow the only available consultation for the specialist surgeon there is 8.30am.
So it will be a predawn drive to pick girlie up at Grafton and head south to Coffs Harbor tomorrow morning. It is felt she may have to stay in the vet until surgery Monday.
So there it is so far. Girlie is doing alright. Thanks again for all your good wishes.
Will update tomorrow when we return from our little trip to the coast.
Kind regards,
Bally:)

Yes I'm relieved she is fine. My son, who is her best mate got home from school today and asked. "Will she be able to run again?" I said, well come to the specialist tomorrow and ask there mate. So he'll be a day off school and sit in the rear of the car with girlie.
Thanks for your thoughts.

It's amazing what the specialists are capable of @"Bally002".
I watch The SUPERVET (Noel Fitzpatrick) all the time and he performs miracles with broken/shattered/crushed limbs and more, every day.
Well worth taking a look-see if you haven't seen him before. (He's an Irishman, working from his practise ( Fitzpatrick Referrals) in England) ...even if just to get an idea of what is possible nowadays!
The Best of Luck to yourself and your Girlie.

G Thank you for that Gordi. Will most certainly look at that. Anything better than amputating.

Keep an open mind on that, Mate. There's far less long-lasting pain. Might be better for Girlie than dragging around a useless limb (that can run into all kinds of problems for her later). Make the wise call.
Hoping for the best outcome here.
Fingers crossed,
Snarl
'Cause if they catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks
They're gonna send you back to Mother in a cardboard box
You better run!

Glad to hear she's going to be okay.
I had a cat that had his back leg crushed by a table that fell on him. I had the same options as you. I went with pins and seeing if the bones would heal together first, but that didn't work out. To make a long story short, I had to go with amputation of the leg.
I was worried that he wouldn't be able to get around, but once he healed, he ran through the house and jumped on things almost as well as the other cats. He chased them and seemed to be very happy. He developed very strong muscles in his front legs to carry the weight of not having his rear leg.
So, if you're worried that your baby won't be able to get around without her leg, put that out of your mind.
Also, you might want to consider that all the pins and damage to her leg will cause severe arthritis as she ages.

I hope it goes well and that she heals quickly! Hi drussell41. Cheers for your support.
Healing is apparently going to take time. I'll do another write up to bring everyone up to date. Your post is most appreciated.
