Simon and Garfunkel put that song together, it flopped, they disbanded because they had some artistic issues....
Later the producer remixed it with electronic instruments and drums and re-released it without telling them.
When that version became an instant hit, they got back together to do a second album (The Sounds of Silence) and they went on to become one of the most known duos ever.
Fun conspiracy fact, This song supposedly was written after Paul Simon read an article about a woman who was murdered in New York City in 1964. She was attacked by her killer and stabbed once near her apartment building, and the killer fled.
Later she was in her building and still alive when he stabbed her a second time, where she proceeded to scream for help. He finally killed her with a third stabbing. Throughout the entire time 37 witnesses had seen her being attacked and had done nothing. It was only until a man in her building called the police, did they find out about her.
When asked about why they had done nothing, people responding by saying "It was too late," "I went to bed" and "if you don't get out of my face, I'll push you done the stairs." It turned out that majority of the people were immigrants from Germany who had survived the Holocaust and the war, and had tried to speak up about what Nazis were doing to people, and were in turn thrown into concentration camps themselves.
One person told police, "Last time I talked to the police about someone being murdered, it nearly cost me my life," Its the sound of silence.
I actually prefer this version...

You tell him who you've seen

He's got this dream about buying some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one-night stands
And then he'll settle down
In some quiet little town
And forget about everything Baker Street? Uhm , steeley Dan? Just going by memory, not searching for it.

I don't know why I left
But I know I was wrong
And it won't be long
'Til I get on Back home
Mama Mama don't you cry
Your ol' boy ain't gonna die
No it won't be long
'Til I get on Back home

'Cause if they catch you in the back seat trying to pick her locks
They're gonna send you back to Mother in a cardboard box
You better run!

Can I play?
"Yeah, it's only gonna be about an hour or so
'Til they rip off all your mountains, boy,
And that one last tired old eagle bites the sand.
And all of that high-and-mighty scenery's
Gonna be leveled to the ground, boy,
By a bunch o' them mindless strip mines on the land."

10-roger, I know you know.
I've never understood why it didn't get more air time back in the day. It's one of my favorite rap songs.

And he spied it and turned white as a sheet.

Like you, I think I'll wait and see if anyone else gets it. We seem to run in the same circles musically.
