The man is reported to have run into London Central Mosque in Regent's Park and stabbed the Muaddin in the neck.
London's Metropolitan Police confirmed the attack in a statement and said the injured man was treated at the scene
before being taken to hospital. Scotland Yard are not treating the incident as terror related and the assailant has been
arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A witness to the attack said the suspect had been a regular in the mosque and had been attending since at least six
months ago. He had been praying "silently" behind the holy man before launching the attack on the 70-year-old man.
Worshippers reportedly jumped on the attack and tackled him to the ground, disarming him before police managed
to swoop in. Early reports of the attack surfaced on Twitter alongside images of a man in a red jacket being
apprehended.
One Twitter user said: "A man ran into Regents Park Mosque during Asr prayer today (late afternoon prayer) and stabbed
the Muaddin in the neck. "This is absolutely terrible." "No muslim is safe in their place of worship!!"
A second user wrote: "This guy has just stabbed one of our muezzin in our local mosque (regents park mosque) while
everyone was getting ready for prayer. "Please be aware of him!"
Dramatic footage emerging from the scene shows a knife lying on the floor as police arrested the suspect.
He was led away by officers as worshippers looked on and comes just hours after a suspected far-right terrorist opened
fire in the German town of Hanau and killed nine people.
The suspect and his mother were found dead in his apartment overnight on Thursday morning following a huge manhunt.
In a statement the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called to a mosque in Park Road, NW8, at 15.10hrs on Thursday,
20 February, to reports of a stabbing. "Officers attended along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service
(LAS). A man was found with stab injuries.
"He was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital. We await an update on his condition.
"A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.
"A crime scene has been put in place. Enquiries continue. "Enquiries into the circumstances continue."
Boris Johnson has responded to the attack and said he is "deeply saddened" to hear of the attack.
Johnson said: "I'm deeply saddened to hear of the attack at the London Central Mosque.
"It's so awful that this should happen, especially in a place of worship. My thoughts are with the victim and all those affected."
Chief Superintendent Helen Harper, Central-West Borough Command Unit (BCU), said: “This was a profoundly shocking
incident inside a place of worship and an urgent investigation is being carried out into the circumstances.
“Although we believe this to be an isolated incident, patrols have been increased around the area of the mosque to provide
reassurance to worshippers and the local community.
“The investigation into this incident is being led by officers on Central-West borough command unit.
“A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene and he has been taken into custody. “The man is believed to have been
attending prayers inside the mosque. “I would like to thank everybody in the mosque who helped to detain the man before
he was arrested and continue to help my officers with their enquiries.
“I’m extremely relieved the injuries suffered by the victim do not appear to be life-threatening.
“However, this incident has undoubtedly caused a great deal of concern and we are working as swiftly as possible to
establish the circumstances. “No other suspects are being sought at this time.”..'
