My inner thighs are not quite as delicate as those depicted above Phil...

I didn't mean to pry, it's just that we hear a lot about how the wind whistles 'doon' the glen
in your neck-of-the-woods and knowing that you enjoy wearing the kilt, I thought that the
chafing wind may have brought on a grand case of skin-hardening.

A proud native Scotsman.... drinking bourbon in the woods??
How dare you? I say! LOL

(It has been known for a "modest" amount of Single Malt Scotch to sneak in there on occasion.... but, unfortunately.... not on this occasion!)

Yesterday... we had a nice sunny (but cold) break in the dank grey bleakness that had been February...
So BigG did what comes naturally to him... NO not that!.... and headed out to "release" a new mushroom!

Yup, I have a pretty good wee Victorinox Swiss-Army Knife and just use that.

I think I have photos of the process... mid-carve somewhere around here!
I'll have a look-see if I can find them...

Found ONE! LOL

OK, you can't see the knife... but it should give you some idea as to the "process" from stick to shroom!

(I use the saw on my knife to cut a ring just below what will be the cap of the mushroom first.
Then whittle the body down to that saw-cut.
Sometimes I leave a ring of bark on the edge of the mushroom... sometimes not!

Once I'm happy with it... Just saw through the base end and "release" into the wild!!)

Well, the big fella has ramped it up a notch...

May I present... my first ever... hand-carved wooden spoon!

I'm very proud (despite the fact that you can buy them, 3 for a pound down at the B&M homestore) because I made it myself!

I had bought Chrissie a curved wood-crafting knife recently, and this morning was our first chance to try it out... what a GREAT way to spend an hour or two... sitting in the garden with a small machete... a curvy craft knife... and some off-cuts of a young Birch Tree which had been blown down in the recent storms.

I'm a happy man I tells ya....

Yes, your honour I believe that this is every bit as therapeutic as the mushroom carving.... no your honour, I do not release the spoons back into the wild...

There's a legend that over the years, slid doon(?) from the heather-covered highlands to the
miserable-weathered country across the wall that Hadrian once peed against.
It speaks of a enigmatic skill of utensil carving and cutlery fashioning.

It's been said that this secretive coven of people that whittle and hew in the wee-small hours
list among the famous and common, and yet none know their names.

One can mull on what wondrous tales those wooden shavings could tell and what revelations
lay among the chippings. Like Merlin's wand and Moses' staff, the life in the timber needs to
released and only the select know the magic spell.

It's a fork next, Gordi... your progress up the stairs of succession continues.

It must be "In The Blood" Phil! (You can see some of mine on the spoon if you look close enough!!!)

It is sooooooo therapeutic to do though.... I ALWAYS feel so much better after a quick whittle! LOL

minusculebeercheers

PS - side benefit of the whittling and carving is the production of all the shavings which will be dried out and used as fire-starting tinder!
BONUS!

Nice! And only a couple of hours? Hell, with the right wood that can last  quite some time and retain a good chili flavor  tinycool
