How Manure became S.H.I.T.
#1
Quote:Back in the days of wagons and carts, pulled by horse, mules and oxen, ships moved hay and.......
Manure
An interesting fact about Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything for export had to be transported by ship.
It was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common.

It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas.

As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles - you can imagine what could (and did) happen.

Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined  just what was happening.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction Stow high in transit them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this "volatile" cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

You probably did not know the true history of this word.

^^^Many people thought it was a golf term.^^^

Apparently, this is a hoax, Sky... but I'm all for it as the 'e-rumour' sounds better and
snacks of commonsense!

'Summary of eRumor:

According the the eRumor, in the 16th and 17th centuries, dry manure that was transported aboard ships
sometimes got wet, fermented, and released methane gas, which is explosive.
Many ships were destroyed before the source of the gas was recognized and after that manure was marked
“S.H.I.T,” which meant “ship high in transit.  In other words, away from the bottom of the ship and the potential
of coming into contact with water.

The Truth:
This email is a hoax.
There is no historical evidence that “Ship High in Transit” aboard ships was the origin for the word “shit.”
The eRumor has circulated on the Internet since about 2000.

This issue is specifically addressed by the folks at the Online Etymology Dictionary who say that “Despite
what you read in an e-mail, ‘shit’ is not an acronym.”
The Merriiam-Webster dictionary dates the word back to 1526 and says that is is from the Old English
scite and akin to a related word –scitan and means to defecate.

A writer for the Online Etymology Dictionary points out that the use acronyms didn’t develop until the 20th
century so a word that is hundreds of years old would not have originated as an acronym...'

But I still wouldn't rule it out as a golf term!!

When I was younger, I tried to play golf and discovered that I was not only useless at it,
I found that the word 'shit' was something I automatically uttered the moment I saw
that the golf ball was still on the tee after I'd swung at it.

Special words used in athletic sports such as golf are important and I think when the game
is televised, it's use isn't advertised enough.

I also frown on the 'stealing' of this golf-word when describing CNN.

I was lucky when I started to play. One friend was a simi-pro and another two friends had played on the PGA tour for 7 years each.  They all worked with me when I first stared.. I was a big tennis player and could hit a golf ball normal shot with a 4 iron 215... After my first talking to and simi lesson I could not hit a 4 iron over 185 but I hung in there... Golf is a hard game if you want to be competitive and more than a hacker..

I give my wife one stroke a hole and she won 200 baht from me this morning.. The girl hits her drives farther than most of the guys I play with.. Kinda pisses me off for she has only been playing for less than 2 years....BUT... I never let her do her own thing with her swing when she first started.. Now she thinks she is the expert !!

Women are the easiest to teach because once they understand how to use their legs and hips they start hitting the ball quicker than a guy who wants to hands and arms over power everything..

I can only imagine the problems to face if Boy In A Dress wanted to take up the game, then!

Everything you just said there could be interpreted another way, especially, "I give my wife one stroke a hole", and "Women are the easiest to teach because once they understand how to use their legs and hips they start hitting the ball quicker."

But, we won't go there.   giggling
