We did have a problem with spam bots here, but we set it up so that every new account had to be approved, to keep them from crashing us. Even with that, we at one point were having to deny around 800 attempts to create spam accounts per day. As you can imagine, that got pretty tedious, so that was when we set it to request an account via e-mail. That finally put a stop to the spammer attempts.
