In a lot of European countries the tax makes up more than 60% of the price. One rough example from Germany:
For Germany, after all taxes, it's about 98cent / L taxes.
The mineral oil companies' profit per L: 0,5-4cent
The gas station profit per L: 0,5 -2 cent
The state is earning between 25 to 196 times as much per L doing nothing at all, than the fuel station owners or the ones that actually pull it out of the ground and refine it.
