My mistake. The author's name was Louis L'Amour (not Armour). His autobiography mentioned in passing the Silk Road, and specifically, the Tian Shan mountains as well as the Gobi Desert.
Later, I ran across notions about the "King of the World" and Shangri-La.
Naturally, my imagination ran wild.
