The lines of division are cities vs less populated areas, in almost every state.  Even CA isnt progressive away from the populated coast.  Im not sure how a split can be along these lines.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that the urban population centers make policy for the entire area of a state, including the rural areas that want no part of it.

Some states are less zombieified than others. Some states are seeking to change their state borders.

So, the breakup or balkanization would be accomplished largely along state lines, just as soon as those boundaries settled in their new configurations. Urban centers would determine the direction of the state, and rural areas unhappy with that would secede from that state to join another state more in line with their thinking.

I'll use Virginia as an example, although the phenomenon is not limited to Virginia - it's just the one I know the most about. A few years ago, VA got a new Marxist legislature courtesy of the urban areas, funded by Little Mikey Bloomberg and George Soros... and the urban areas of the state decided they were going to disarm the rural areas "for the children", so they elected a gun-grabbin' legislature to lord it over the entire state.

That legislature started exploring and passing Leftist laws aimed at disarming the rural population, but the rural population wasn't having any of that, and a "come, bring your ass out here and get 'em then" attitude developed. "Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties" started popping up like mushrooms after a rainstorm. County militias started forming, sanctioned by the county boards and sheriffs. It was like a young war brewing here.

Then West Virginia stepped into the fray and invited any VA counties that wanted to to join up with WV instead. Just walk away from an oppressive dictatorial government and re-attach to a more like minded state. Jim Justice made a formal announcement of the open invitation. Some counties considered it. Just walking away is often preferable to bloodshed.

The legislature must have done a cost-benefit analysis, as they started drawing back on some of their more outrageous proposals. The government did not have the troop numbers, not even combining the State Police and the National Guard, to enforce their edicts on a pissed off and still armed rural population. 95% of all the counties in VA became 2A Sanctuaries. If they even tried, there would have been open war with the concurrent loss of almost the entire western half of the state to WV, and with it would go that portion tax base and the natural resources in it. So, they had a lot to lose and not much to gain by pushing harder, so they backed the hell off.

They had nothing to gain by disarming us because it was not like us ruralites were grabbing our guns and loading up into pickup trucks and raiding the cities. We left them alone, and simply announced that for the health of everyone concerned, they'd better damned well leave us alone, too.

However, had the Marxists in Richmond decided to push us instead, the world would have witnessed just how the balkanization of a nation could come about, by watching Virginia as a microcosm of the concept.

Similar things have been explored out west. I've heard parts of California want to secede, parts of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. One county in northern Colorado got so disgusted with the malfeasance of Denver that they wanted to leave Colorado and join Wyoming. had they done so, that county was populous enough that they would have increased the population of Wyoming by somewhere between 33% and 50% just by reattaching to Wyoming after leaving Colorado.

So, yeah, the balkanization of America is doable for someone determined enough to just do it, and we are fast approaching that point due to the widening political division the nation is witnessing due to the actions of the Divider in Chief.

Ive also wondered if the rest of the country votes on a state splitting up, in the process creating another state, as it also creates two more senators and additional congressional seats.
