There is nothing any nursling home anywhere on the planet can do for a person with dementia, Alzheimer's or terminal lymphoma that cannot be done just as well or better at home. Given only that someone cares about you, you are already better off than in any cold, indifferent, even hostile, institution staffed by employees who are strangers in uniforms. In a nursing home you will never again brew your own cup of coffee; or decide the menu; or make the food your way; or choose the channel on the TV; and you will be surrounded constantly by others who suffer, complain, die and disappear!! You think their overall quality of life is now improved? It says this is against their will. So, then. whose will has prevailed?!?! In US or anywhere else on earth, nursing homes are never for those inside except in the thinking of those of you who have put someone there or cherish the option of doing so. Those among you will now come forward with apocryphal anecdotal tales you are never ashamed to publish about how necessary it was and how much better it was. From now on when you watch TV and see an ad for a nursing home take note: the ads are never directed at the persons intended to be in them: "does your loved one need help? does he search for words? does he get confused?...." Nursing homes are for those who will remain free but who do not want the old people on their hands. Who do not think the old people are worth the trouble; and for those for whom it provides an excuse to their consciences for extracting powers of attorney and stealing the home and all assets of the elderly person. Virtually no person ever puts themselves into a nursing home! If you have assets do not be naïve: take every possible precaution to protect yourself from imprisonment. Once someone takes your arm or enters a home with you it is way too late: if you protest no one will listen- it will reinforce the conclusion that you are in desperate need of help. Without a court order no next of kin ever has legally recognized power to imprison you: no doctor; no spouse; no one! Yet it is done all day every day and the world yawns! Nursing homes are one of the great dirty secrets. they are myths wrapped within a mystique. They are for profit businesses!
