I have said many times good will only beat evil if it becomes more evil than the evil it is fighting.

I don't think so.

Good may have to do things that appear evil, Things that will give it nightmares for years, but it cannot BECOME evil. Once it becomes evil, there is no coming back from that, and when that is the case, you've not changed a thing - you've merely replaced one evil with another.

BUT - if good actually becomes evil, it probably won't have the nightmares, so there IS that.

Life is full of choices.

The "lesser evil" is almost always seen as good, but its still evil. Have you noticed that things that were seen as evil 30 odd years ago are now seen as good or less evil. After the fight is over( if good wins) good pulls back from evil but never makes it all the way back, so slowly good becomes evil
Its only because we move the bench marks do we fool ourselves that many things are still "good"
